Highlights from 2007
In 2007, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress organized many forums, screenings, trainings and Dem Sums (Democracy Summit) throughout the year. Highlights include:
March – APAP San Francisco hosts a premiere party for the film Tre during the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Over 200 attend, including the director and stars of several films.
April/May – APAP chapters in Chicago and Philadelphia endorsed local Asian Americans running for city council (Naisy Dolar in Chicago and Andrew Toy in Philadelphia) and provide additional volunteer support.
May – Conference Call with Elizabeth Edwards. In honor of APA Heritage Month, APAP organized a national house party with the Edwards campaign. Almost 70 homes across the country participated.
May - We Do, Too – Special panel on Marriage Equality held in Los Angeles
June/July - National Townhall on Hate Crimes. In honor of the 25th anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin, APAP organized 14 events around that country that featured a screening of the award-winning documentary, “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” along with panels on hate crimes. Guest speakers around the country included many of the original participants (Helen Zia, Roland Hwang, Stewart Kwoh, etc.) as well as director Renee Tajima Pena. Events were held in such places as Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Raleigh, Portland, Milwaukee, New York City and Washington, DC. Sponsored by Imaginasian TV, a 30-minute special is being produced for 2008.
Aug - Revisiting SA-I-GU. A special screening and panel in New York.
Aug - Midwest APA Activist Training in Chicago. Over 125 APA's from across the Midwest attended a training led by the DNC's Director of Training, Parag Mehta.
Aug – APAP sent a 20-person delegation to the DNC’s Majority Partnership Meeting in Las Vegas. In addition, APAP hosted a well-attended reception at the hotel.
Nov – APAP’s Los Angeles chapter helped to organized several phonebanking days for the CA-55 Special Election with Warren Furutani
Dec - VOICES TO VOTES: An Asian / Latino Issues Forum featuring representatives from the leading Democratic Presidential Campaigns with special celebrity appearance by Kelly Hu. Attended by over 250 individuals in Los Angeles
