Hello APA for Progress,Grace Lee, here. Thanks to Curtis, Jenn and Monica for inviting me to post here about my movie AMERICAN ZOMBIE, which opens this Friday in Los Angeles at the Sunset 5 Theaters. I hope you will be able to check it out.
Here's a synopsis: Filmmakers Grace Lee ("The Grace Lee Project") and John Solomon ("Nonsense Man") team up to shoot a documentary about high-functioning zombies living in Los Angeles and their struggles to gain acceptance in human society. Despite their wildly different working styles, Grace and John manage to chronicle the hopes and dreams of four fascinating subjects: IVAN, a convenience-store clerk who longs for a career in publishing; LISA, a florist trying to recover her lost memories; JUDY, a hopeless romantic who learns to accept her true nature; and JOEL, a committed political activist striving for zombie rights. As Grace strives to get to know the zombies "on their own terms," John is eager to uncover their darker side and rallies to get the crew permission to shoot at a three-day, zombies-only retreat called Live Dead where the documentary takes an unexpected and dangerous turn. What transpires there is beyond anything the filmmakers could imagine, as they are forced to re-evaluate their ideas about tolerance, identity politics and the future of the human race.
Some of you may have seen my previous film THE GRACE LEE PROJECT. In some ways, I would call this movie, "THE GRACE LEE PROJECT 2." While some people like to call it a 'mockumentary, I'm more comfortable with the term "personal horror film," as the movie combines elements of personal documentary, comedy, and yes, there are creepy horror bits as well. It IS a zombie movie, after all.
I don't want to say a whole lot about the content of the movie because I hope you'll be able to check it out and let me know what you think. But I do feel that the movie is a personal one...after all, there is a character named Grace Lee in it! &
The film came together very quickly -- we shot it in about 18 days in the spring of 2006 and less than a year later, it premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, moving on to other festivals -- SFIAFF, South by Southwest, VC Filmfest, among others. Another interesting fact -- the film was financed by a Korean company (I Love Cinema/ IHQ), which is known for producing mainstream Korean movies. The fact that they took a risk to produce a low-budget English-language American indie film that pretty much has nothing to do with Korea speaks to the potential of future international coproductions with Asian companies and American filmmakers.
