Another Deliveryman Killed: Why Its Not Just A Simple Robbery

Last week, another Chinese food deliveryman, Thu Nguyen was killed.  His wallet and car were left untouched, but the order of food he was to deliver was taken.  Police later reported that he had been lured to the building by a face order placed by the attacker.

When individuals are shooting, stabbing and assaulting deliveryman for the sole purpose of a free meal, it shows a flagrant disregard for the life of that individual.  This sort of callousness is unique to this particular class of crime as well.  We do not see fancy resturants being held up for a meal, nor is the pizza delivery guy frequently in danger while he does his job.  The racial perception that paints Asian men as weak, numerous and effeminate allows criminals and thugs to consider them expendable.  After that, they have no problem committing horrific and brutal crimes against them.

Despite the what some Republican lawmakers would have you believe, hate crimes are very real and often the motivating factor is not just pure hate.  Instead there is also a malicious and predatory aspect to hate crimes, one that rears its head every time someone is robbed, beaten, raped or otherwise victimized.  Currently, there is no strong deterrent against such crimes and many perpetrate them on the twisted belief that they can get away with it.  Therefore, not only are most of the perpetrators misguided teenagers, but also there is a high degree of premeditation behind these robberies.  An individual should be fearful of doing his job because his ethnicity makes him an attractive target.  A strong deterrent should exist so as to protect their well-being. The hate crime statute exists, but it is never applied to these cases.  These men are not being attacked out of hunger, nor out of financial desparation.  The motivating a factor is lack of respect, bordering on hatred for Asian-Americans.

Although I have mentioned some incidents before, many need to be repeated lest we forget that justice may never find their families

  • Huang Chen, Age: 18 Jamaica (Queens), New York, 2004

Stabbed, beaten and dumped in a nearby lake as part of a gang initiation for two teens.  Wanted money to buy "sneakers". Fake order placed to lure him to apartment.  Face badly mutilated when body found.  Robbed of 49 dollars, killed by thugs because he could "identify them"

Shot in the head after attempted robbery of $22 worth of food.  Fake order was placed, survived the shooting

  • Shi Yi Yan, Age: 46 Hollis (Queens), New York, 2006

Lured by fake call to address, ambushed and shot in chest.  Value of food: 19.50, bullet misses heart and victim survives

Shot in the face after botched robbery, died

Fake order placed, shot when he "smiled" attackers, died.  Value of food and cash: $25

Beaten to death with baseball bat, fake order placed and food was eaten after attack

Beaten by group of teenagers, sheet thrown over head and beaten with brick.  Robbed for $60 of Chinese food, eaten while victim bled to death.  Light sentencing (max 17 years for one of the teens) due to age of offenders

These are just a few incidents from the New York area in the past 10 years.  There are countless other anonymous cases as well.  Is the life of a man worth $20 in food?

Taking from my experiences and observations of quite a number of years, I'll place the blame on the ones calling most loudly against racism, the blacks and hispanics. In NYC, it's most probably more the hispanics than blacks for blacks know much better about racial hatred and should be less hateful than hispanics. Hispanics have almost no history of racial hate in this country, or anywhere really. They don't actually have any racial prejudice hate they can relate to. I am definitely not saying to hate them (an eye for an eye makes the world go blind), but to be watchful and weiry. Experience, observations, and street smarts are your friends.

It's important not to become to jaded regarding race relations in New York City.  Blacks and Whites alike are responsible for these murders.  But I agree, race relations between the Asian community and other communities need to be improved so that convience store owners and delvierymen are no longer seen as

a. foreigners

b. expendable

c. easy targets

Asian men are dehumanized in America.  We are simply not see as human or worthy.  Our stereotypes also work against.  We are not manly, weak.  Weakness is provocative.  In a culture of bully and violence, Asian men are easy target.

I suggest all those Asian parents put their kids in a Martial Art class or sport program to improve their physical abilities.  Asian boys are also the most picked on in schools.

This is a huge Asian-American issue
