LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Update from VoteHope2008.org

Message posted by Stephanie Ong Stillman: With one week to go before elections [in California], I want to share this video with you. This past September, Chris and I had the opportunity to fly to New York to meet Stevie Wonder and film this video. It truly was one of the most memorable and heartfelt moments of our lives! Chris (my husband) filmed and edited the video (he did the music too!).

Obama wins in S.C.

Obama takes South Carolina by 55 points to Clinton's 27. Native son, John Edwards, won only 18% of the vote. While Obama claimed over 80% of the African American vote, 25% of White voters also supported Obama, suggesting he had support across all demographics. Clinton retained her hold over older, White women, but younger men and women supported Obama.

AZN Television Shut Down

Earlier this week, Comcast decided to pull the plug on AZN television network, one of the few remaining networks dedicated to Asian American content. It's frustrating to see so many positive Asian American outlets being decimated due to lack of profit.

It’s desert cold and we are bundled up trying to get warm up with weak drive-thru coffee. Common’s song “A Dream” comes on the ipod. “I have a dream…” the Dr. says with Common beats over, wafting through the radio speakers. How appropriate, I thought to myself. We were had just crossed MLK Ave. on our way to our satellite office, and it was MLK weekend. And we? We were campaigning for Barack Obama, the first viable black candidate for president. It was Saturday morning of the Nevada primary caucus, and we were fighting to have our dream of Obama as our next president to become a reality. Little did I know how classically ironic the day was about to get. ****
