(Asian) America's Best Dance Crew & Voting

Ok ya'll... tonight's finale of Asian America's Best Dance Crew was amazing! 20 million people voted. I soooo wish I could get a hold of voting stats and demographics. Alas... such data is unavailable for nerds like me. It was odd at times in the last week anticipating who would win - the Asian American men OR the group of racially diverse women?  In a way, it kind of felt like Obama v. Hillary all over again. The man of color or the woman? While I love Hillary, the moment Obama arrived on the scene, he had my vote. I think we can agree that Hillary just didn't bring it in the end, like the Beat Freaks... awesome from the beginning and consistent, but fell short in the last challenge. And Quest Crew bringing down the house in the last challenge, but not amazing all season long. So, who won? Would it be Beat Freaks or Quest Crew? Hollywood Ladies or Cerritos Brothas? (Spoiler under the cut)

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="267" caption="Beat Freaks callin' on folks to Freak the Vote!"]Beat Freaks callin on folks to Freak the Vote![/caption] Beat freaks had a very clever campaign trying to Get Out The Vote... bringing me back to an idea some friends and I had last year during elections... Get the ABDC crews to do a PSA to get the AAPI vote out! The final performance tonight was a joint routine by BF and QC. The story told in the performance was basically of 2 crews fighting for VOTES! In the end... who won? [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="390" caption="The brothas from Cerritos, CA"]The brothas from Cerritos, CA[/caption] Yup... Quest Crew. I don't know how you all felt out there in the blogosphere.  I was definitely happy for Quest Crew, but immediately thought, "When will there be a female crew as viable to win it all as Beat Freaks???" mirroring the thoughts of many of my Hillary supporter friends' feelings after primary season last year. So, what do you all think? Am I drawing too many parallels in race, gender and voting to an MTV show? Did race trump gender? Would a PSA starring ABDC crews get more Asian American youth out to vote?

You know what's funny is that I was hoping for Quest to win to get their name out more than BF because an Asian American Male face truly isn't as Commercially Marketable as a Female faces (which, in itself, are also both racist to QC and sexist to BF). We all know females of most racial backgrounds can be marketed. But how often do you see an Asian male face? So I think Quest needed the win. Beat Freaks will still get their name out regardless of a win. And before you start calling me out on the Jabbawockeez getting lots of endorsements, let's just say we barely ever get to see their faces...

I was hoping to see a tie. This is the only season where fans have so much respect to their rivals. I think we’ll still see the runner-up around just like Hillary coz they are awesome and had become sort of role models to many (BeatFreaks not Hillary). MTV has been accused of hyping the ladies, but they can’t be faulted. They can never see again an all-girl crew that amazing. Love season3. Though diverse due to inclusion of cloggers, stompers, and freak show (ringmasters, lol), my buddies think the 3rd serving is weakest in terms of bboy skills and girly in every way. But I don’t care. I love to see that the ladies came out very strong and not just background dancers sashaying their asses. This is (was) the season that got the girls interested, whether they are rooting for the all-ladies crew or the crushable Asians with sick hairstyles and preppy outfits. And because of that this season had the most annoying fans. Sorry girls.

hmmm, interesting linkage being made here. i can't say that i thought about the dance-off between Beat Freaks and Quest Crew like Hill vs. Obama. but i guess i can play that angle with you... i see what you're getting at. personally, i loved the beat freaks and was absolutely mesmerized by quest crew. we would've been happy with either group winning. and i guess that's how i felt about the obama vs. hillary face-off in the primaries. i don't know whether i agree that women are more marketable overall than men of color. i guess it depends on what kind of women are represented... if they're lindsay lohans and miley cyruses, then perhaps. if they're tough and look queer, most definitely not. i think there was a mix in beat freaks... anyhow, my husband was saying that he thought it would be really difficult for a women's dance group to win the ABDC finals. as for ABDC and asian masculinity... the show definitely gives asian american men some much-needed visibility. so, now, visual media has shown that asian men can kick, jump, and dance. but i wouldn't be so quick to say that this show has upped their perceived masculinity quotient. eh, i'm a cynic though. i need to remember to appreciate the baby steps! yay for quest crew. they rocked it!
