On the eve of the President's "big speech" on health reform, my facebook and email are full of "advice".
"Why hasn't he said ____?"
"He needs to just say _____!"
"Write to the President and demand he do ____!"
This is awesome. I had no idea my facebook friends were so capable of being President, and of handling the emotionally charged and extremely complex issue of fixing our broke down health care system. Sheesh, had I known I knew so many Country Fixing Experts... it might have been tougher 2 years ago to decide which campaign to work on. Oh wait, I worked alongside many of these folks on President Obama's Campaign!
Hm, weren't all these folks cheering just as loud as I was when he said "I am asking you to believe, not just in my ability to bring about change in Washington, I'm asking you to believe in yours"? Yes, I'm poking fun, but I'm not saying anyone shouldn't criticize or offer advice to the President. I am simply trying to ask the question "what are you doing for health reform?" Aside from telling the President what to say on facebook, what are you doing to fight for quality and affordable health care for all? If you believe that it is wrong that we live in a country where people suffer because they don't have health care; where people agonize over whether to buy groceries or prescriptions; where insurance companies drop you for being sick... What are you doing about it? Our job did not end on Nov 4, NOW IS THE TIME TO ORGANIZE!
I encourage you to educate yourself beyond the headlines. The Senate Finance Committee is entertaining a terrible proposal and holding up the entire process. Let's help the President put pressure on the Senate to pass a strong bill. Please call your Senators (especially if they are on Senate Finance). CLICK HERE to make the call now! Everyone is hungry for specifics about Obama's stand on major elements of the package. The president, admired the world over for his oratory, has struggled to find the right message on health care.Supporters say it would give people secure benefits like those older Americans get through Medicare, while leaving medical decisions to doctors and patients.Carnegie Mellon University has a great new marketing tool when they came up with the Death Risk Rankings. The Death Risk Rankings are fairly scientific, as the death calculator analyzes statistics and medical questions as well as taking where a person lives into account as well. Their website, at deathrickrankings.com can give you an estimate on whether or not a person will be kicking the bucket in the next year or two. It's a lot more scientific than other death calculator tools that just say a person will get attacked by rabid cannibal squirrels. A person can determine their death risk rankings without needing to get fast cash to find out – but it's only a prediction.
There are a number of specific details (thousands of pages worth) that have been available online. The Presiden't Plan is the most recent, but the Senate HELP and House bills have been available in their entirety. Please check out the links below:
