A quick update about the incident at UC where a writer for student newspaper ran an outrageously offensive and racist anti-Asian article.
Last week, the Asian American community organized and rallied for peace while demanding, among other actions, the removal of Editor in Chief Cassie Hewlings and staff faculty advisor Amy Herdy.
After working at numerous universities and colleges, I am growing frustrated with the lack of accountability editors, editors in chief, and faculty advisers have for particularly sexist, racist, or targeted articles meant to "incite discussion" or take a poor stab at their satire writing skills. It is high time that folks start taking responsibility for what they are proofing and deeming acceptable for publication and circulation. As I have been following this incident unfold at UC, I am proud to say that Asian American community at UC has responded with passion, direction, and vision.
