About seventeen students of Asian Outlook Magazine attended Binghamton's first ever participation in the National API House party. Asian Outlook is a student-run publication at the State University of New York at Binghamton that covers Asian and Asian-American politics, entertainment, personal experiences and creative works.
The biggest issue to nearly all at the party was Arizona's immigration law, as the majority of us are either immigrants or the children of immigrants. We were glad to hear the grassroots effort taken to fight against this law. There was a lively discussion on how said law could possibly be enforced without the use of racial profiling, with the general agreement that provisions in the bill against racial profiling were impossible to apply in most situations. We want to help fight this measure, however the best we can do for now is fight anti-immigrant sentiment here in New York State.
We were also happy to hear from Kal Penn as he is an easily identifiable political figure in our age group. We were especially happy to hear about the Obama's administration's plan to reach out to vulnerable API communities and fighting the "model minority" myth.
All in all, we look forward to next year's house party and the sense of community it gives with our API brethren.
