As one of the
leading voices in the Republican party these days, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal found himself in a difficult spot. The Republican members of Congress were leaning hard on all their members to
bring down the whole economic stimulus package. (Of course they were just taking their marching orders from their actual leader,
Rush Limbaugh.)
Joining his Republican brethrens in Congress, the Governor had no problem
talking smack about the
stimulus package:
I do worry about the debt being created. I worry about the fact that our children and our grandchildren will have to pay back this debt. And I worry that many of the programs that are being called temporary aren't really temporary at all," he said.
The problem is his state, you know, the one hit by Hurricane Katrina, sorely needs the infrastructure support. (Got levees, anyone?) Anyway, what's a poor old Republican Governor to do?
Well, it seems like some Republicans are now making noise about reaching out their hands for help,
including Jindal:
However, the governor said today that he will carefully consider the final version of the bill to see which Louisiana projects might be funded with federal money laid out in the legislation.
In fact, don't be surprised to see these Republicans running around their districts, taking credit for the stimulus money and showing up for all the photos ops in front of their voters.
We shouldn't let these hypocritical politicians get away with this (and this includes the
conservative Blue Dog Democrats). We have to remind the American public who supported the stimulus package and who didn't. Accountability is important and we can't allow the Republicans to have their cake and eat it, too.
