The Butler Koshland Fellowship Program Is Accepting Applicants

Sandy Kajiyama of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP)  brings us this opportunity to work with Mary Hughes of Staton Hughes, a well known Bay Area strategic communications and political consulting firm. The fellow will work closely with Mary and staff to spearhead the politics and gender projects outlined in the description (please see below). Please read the qualifications and forward to appropriate channels and networks. If you have questions about the fellowship, please contact Sandy at sandy@aapip.org. It sounds like an amazing fellowship opportunity! The Butler Koshland Fellowship Program - Politics and Gender Fellowship The Butler Koshland Fellowship program is looking for an independent, intelligent, and highly-motivated person to work with Mary Hughes, co-founder and president of political consulting firm Staton Hughes. The Butler Koshland Fellowship is a unique program designed to pass on leadership skills through a mentor-fellow model. We match professionals of exceptional ability who have a passion for social justice with an ambitious fellow who is ready to absorb information and driven to share it with others. All fellowships are for a period of one year and require that both the mentor and fellow be ready, willing, and able to grow and whole-heartedly learn from one another during this immersive process. The fellow would work under the direction and guidance of Ms. Hughes on non-partisan research and organizing projects. Representative projects include: The Role of Gender in Elections. Research and analysis of women's campaigns and candidacies to understand the role gender plays in voters' considerations and decisions. The fellow will work closely with Ms. Hughes evaluating a wide range of information from polls and focus groups to interviews, ads and news coverage. The 2012 Project. A research, organizing and recruiting proposal that seeks to take advantage of the newly created congressional and legislative districts in the post-reapportionment election of 2012. The objective is to significantly increase the numbers of women serving in legislative office. The focus of the work will be on connecting women's professional, trade and grassroots organizations in an effort to identify, inform and recruit highly qualified women to run. Women and Public Service. Research, write and design a workbook that raises and answers basic questions about the variety of opportunities, time demands and rewards of public service. Material might include book, film and lecture recommendations, personal stories and words of advice from those who have succeeded. Because the duties to be assigned are so varied, this position demands a fellow with an equally diverse set of skills and personality traits, including: intellectual agility, friendliness, curiosity, strong reading and writing abilities, acumen for complex research, sense of humor, and cultural sensitivity. Applicants also must be adept at organizing both their own work and the work of others, have practical experience in making things happen, and know when to be discrete. Candidates should have a serious desire to understand the ways power and gender work together in the political arena. To apply please submit a cover letter and resume addressing your qualifications and interest in this fellowship. A demonstrated interest in politics - via internship, educational background, past work experience, and the like - must be explicated in all applications. Please also be sure to address your experience in terms of research ability. Please send all applications via email to bkfellow@gmail.com with the subject line "Staton Hughes Fellowship" - only those chosen to interview will be contacted. Please do not contact Staton Hughes directly. Staton Hughes is an equal opportunity employer. The Butler Koshland Fellowship is open to all applicants. The fellow will be paid $40,000 for the year, plus expenses. A flex-time schedule of 40 hours per week, plus periodic travel is required. The fellow will work out of Ms. Hughes Palo Alto office. The deadline for submissions is February 20, 2009. PDF of description
