Carmen Chu tackles illegal pot growing

In San Francisco, Supervisor Carmen Chu is really trying to make a name for herself when it comes to "cleaning up" the streets of San Francisco.  First, she went after the massage parlors and prostitutes.  Now she is going after illegal marijuana growing operations.

On Tuesday, she requested a hearing on the illegal growing operations to include a host of reports from different city departments about the problem:

The San Francisco Police Department, on its recent busts and, along with the Fire Department, the public safety implications of the illegal operations; the District Attorney’s Office, on the status and prosecution results of illegal grow arrests; and the Department of Public Health, on medical cannabis cards and how many are cardholders exist, with those numbers being broken down by supervisorial district.

A recent crackdown on illegal marijuana growing in the Sunset District has pushed the issue center stage.

The busts also highlight the sensitivity of the enforcement given that, as The Examiner has reported, The City has in place a policy making enforcement marijuana possession a “lowest priority.”
