Carrying on the Legacy of Lau v. Nichols: Chinese Immigrant Youth Organize for College Access

It's always great to hear stories about youth learning to be empowered community organizers and leaders.  In Oakland, the Asian Immigrant Women Advocates youth group is doing something about the disparities experienced by immigrant youth and college readiness.  They've been lobbying to make all high schools in Oakland and San Francisco require that all students complete college prep courses required by the University of California and Cal State University systems.  They've even made a guide book for their peers to know what is required for college. The rest of the story can be found here.

Way to go!

And if any of the youth organizers are reading this, my advice for your college essays (as a former admissions reader) is to write about this experience of making a difference in society, not just for yourself, but for others like you!

Being a student is not that easy because in order for you to reach for your dreams, there are lots of challenges that you need to survive. Right now, students and parents alike are wondering about the outcome of the FCAT scores 2009. The FCAT, or Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, is the state assessment test administered every year from grade 3 to grade 11. The results of the test in grade 10 (sophomore year of high school) are the results that determine if the student will graduate, making FCAT scores 2009 a cause of anxiety, or celebration. They also bear on college admissions, unless a student wants to avoid personal loans and get their Associates at a community college and transfer from there. (It cuts costs, and the credits count.) Hopefully, few students will need credit repair with academia as a result of FCAT scores 2009.

Thanks for your comments Caitlyn!  If you've been following my blog posts, you know that I am no fan of standardized tests.  They cause way too much anxiety and really don't test students on what you really need to be successful in iife - leadership skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, and critical thinking.

I have yet to see a test that actually assesses these skills among youth.

Instead, a lot of these tests assess how well you take multiple-GUESS tests, and I think it makes parents and families push their children to get really good at these tests, and not at the skills that are really needed in life!

Good luck with school, Caitlyn!

I also agree, I have two young cousins in the Floridian school system and their parents are constantly worried about the FCAT.  It gets to point where preping for this test is affecting his social and emotional development.  Pressure of this type should never be put on elementary school kids

Personally, I hate standardized tests.  Although I usually did well on them, on one of my first, the teacher tampered with my answer sheet to give a barely passing grade.  Her motive was to justify kicking me out of the gifted class.  That incident nearly messed me up BIG time.  Im lucky that someone got suspecious and investigated.  The potential for these tests to mess kids up is way too high.  The whole damn system is wrong.
