Vermont State Senate Votes YES for Gay Marriage

I watched the Vermont State Senate discuss and then vote on bill S. 115 to grant same-sex civil marriage. The bill passed 26-4 and will now be sent to the house where it should pass. The bill will then move on to republican governor Jim Douglas who may very well veto it. If it is vetoed by the governor, it's back to the legislature where they'll fight it out for enough votes for a veto override. Below is the play-by-play if you so desire.

Nerdy Fun at NYTimes.com with Immigration and Education

Over at the New York Times website, they're doing a really interesting series on how immigration is "remaking" America. Funny, since I thought immigrants have always been making and defining America.

DC Voting Rights and Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders: Still Second Class Citizens?

I first moved to the Washington, DC metropolitan area when my twin brother had just been shipped off to Guam where he was to be stationed as part of the U.S. Navy.  We noted the irony that with the two of us living in the nation’s capital and the far-off Pacific Island U.S. territory of Guam, neither of us had a voting representative in Congress.  Delegates Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Robert A. Underwood (D-GU) both served their districts and this nation admirably over the years, but they were, quite literally, second class citizens compared to their colleagues in the House of Representatives.  They were able to participate in committees, where some of the important work of legislation happens, but when it came to an actual vote on the laws of the land, they were denied.

Stimulating Education

Hey Asian Americans! President Obama just announced his plans to change education policy. Where is everyone getting all worked up over the proposals??? It's always so interesting to me  that Asian Americans get all worked up over elite college admissions, but rarely do they articulate any interest in education policy.  Is it just not as sexy a topic? What is it?  What do you think? There are definitely some  interesting things in the education portion of the stimulus... let's take a look, shall we?

Congress introduces Employee Free Choice Act!

Quick reminder: The Employee Free Choice Act is the reason us Progressives were ready to fight the all-in good fight for this person below.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="150" caption="Secretary of Labor Solis!"]Secretary of Labor Solis![/caption]
The Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in Congress today and members of the Corportocracy Elite are deathly upset.  This includes virtually all conservative members of Congress on both sides of the aisle. Bernard Marcus, former CEO of Home Depot, is so upset about the Employee Free Choice act that in a conference call with other Corportocracy Royalists called this legislation the "demise of civilization!"  Don't believe me?  I even have the audio below.
Bernie Marcus claims the Employee Free Choice Act will be the demise of civilization as we know it

Gary Locke and the Progressive APA Dilemma

gary_locke When I found out that Gary Locke was nominated to be Secretary of Commerce, I felt a weird sensation wash over me. With every APA blog post, every APIAA organization press release, and every APA podcast singing praises upon the Governor, my heart sunk. The reality is that I may be the only one in this small APA blogosphere who hesitates to happily welcome a third Asian American to President Obama's cabinet--I'm so torn. It's a dilemma because in truth, I am actually happy that Governor Locke may become the nation's second APA Secretary of Commerce. He was a solid Governor of the State of Washington and a committed social progressive. Governor Locke is also committed to his APA roots--from his 1997 speech to the AAJA:
"And we have to remember that America belongs to all of us - not just to those whose families have been here longest, or to those who have connections, or to those who never suffered the indignity of slavery, exclusion, or defeat."

(Asian) America's Best Dance Crew and the Asian American Vote

Yea, I know... I'm the education blogger. What the heck am I doing writing about MTV's America's Best Dance Crew? Because honestly I think there's no better phenonomen out there to talk about the Asian American vote, and to learn about the power of the Asian American vote. Plus, the show is mad dope... and really should just be renamed Asian America's Best Dance Crew!

State of Asian America

front-apap-buttons Dear Friends, As you may have noticed, since the beginning of the year, our blog has been trying to beef up our content. We hope you've enjoyed the added posts on news items, events and opportunities, as well as some of the analysis we've been providing. In the coming weeks (and months), we'll be gradually increasing our policy discussion. We hope you all read Oiyan Poon's excellent six-part series on the U.C. Admissions Scandal of 2009. If not, check it out. Oiyan will continue on as our Education Editor, providing comments on education policy. We are also assembling a team of experts on immigration, health care, urban policy and other issues, all of whom will be adding to the debate. It is our goal to make this a hub of discussion, to help percolate ideas and help establish a set of priority agenda for the community. If you would like to join our blog team, please let us know. In particular, we'd like to find people to cover the environment, labor issues and civil rights. In a similar spirit, here is a press release from the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and Congressman Mike Honda:
STATE OF THE ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER COMMUNITY Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) issued the following statement on the State of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community: “Today, our nation faces tremendous challenge. People throughout our country are losing their jobs, their homes, and struggling to keep their families afloat. We are in tough times, and as the President stated in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, we will rebuild together, and by developing our resilience, we will emerge stronger and more unified as a nation.
