If you've been following the news, you'll know that the insurance industry, aided by Republicans, has been orchestrating protestors at health care forums all across the country. In addition to ripping up posters of Rosa Parks, these protestors have been spreading fear and lies about the health care reform and Oregon is no exception. At a townhall hosted by Democratic Congressman David Wu (OR-XX), Wu was heckled by critics in the audience.
Some critics who spoke claimed the Obama administration was attempting to euthanize the elderly, fund abortion and provide health care to illegal immigrants under the reform plan.
"I don't know how many times I can say it, but let me try to say it one more time -- illegal aliens are not covered under these bills, period," Wu responded.
Wu also said abortion isn't mentioned in the plan.
A critic who identified himself only as Steve said a provision that Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., proposed to allow patients to consult with their doctors about end-of-life care, including palliative and hospice care, would lead to euthanasia and genocide.
Wu responded, saying the man's claim was inaccurate and damaging to public discourse.
"It is an outrageous falsehood that there is anything like what you are talking about," Wu added. "It does not do us proud to have the discourse hijacked."
Despite requests to be quiet, the man spent much of the remainder of the hourlong meeting heckling Wu and calling him "fascist."
It was disappointing to not see Wu's name included on the list of almost 60 Congressmembers who sent a recent letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi in support of the public option. However, according to his website, he has two more scheduled town hall:
August 13, 4:00-5:00
Seaside Public Library; 1131 Broadway, Seaside
August 14, 4:00-5:00
Columbia Learning Center; 375 South 18th Street, St. Helens
If you live in Wu's district, please try to attend and get him to support the public option. As you can tell, the anti-reformers are showing up.
I live in Rep. Wu's district. He did a good job yesterday of trying to explain where the various health care bills are in Congress at the moment, what his personal opinions are and to dispel some of the ridiculous notions being passed around by the anti-reformers (death-panels, abortion clinics @ schools). To propose that your doctor will help explain advanced directives is not a death panel. Who makes this up? Is Rove back in the fray? I helped my grandparents fill out their AD. I am 46 years old and I have one. What is wrong with people? Do you want to be in a vegetative state for 40 years because you can? Did you know 50% of Medicare money is spent in the last 6 months of a person’s life? Are you just trying to keep them alive? For what purpose? So they can breathe until the angels come and take them away? So they can be fed through a tube? That is not living. I am disabled, and on Medicare. This argument affects me directly.
I think he did a good job of handling himself and did not take the bait when it was offered to spar over silly things that are simply untrue.
This forum was for us, his constituents, to get our questions answered and to see which way he is leaning on some core issues. With Ron Wyden coming today, I believe we in Clatsop County will have the answers we need to make an informed decision about whether to support these two men as they continue their work. As for me, I will continue to support their work, knowing they are up against the huge insurance and pharmaceutical lobbies as well as groups of uninformed people that are silly enough to think the government wants to kill their grandparents and pay for abortions. Get a grip. We want real health care reform and unlike 1993, we aren't going to stop until we get it. We will not be heckled into silence by the ill-informed people who are against something they are not even educated about.
Rep. Wu's event yesterday in Seaside was 97% civil because we are an educated community and do not put up with people standing and yelling at our elected officials. No need for acting like a 5 year old when Rep. Wu was absolutely willing to hear any question posed to him.
Sorry for the double post. Admin, please delete one of them. I am not familiar with your UI. I'll improve as time goes along!
Chagrined,
Hallie
Being "informed" extends beyond the here-and-now. Those of us who are students of history know that this is the first step in the direction of rationed, single-payer healthcare. Their own words express their desire to see this kind of healthcare that has failed miserably in every country that's tried it! Sure, Canada has a balanced healthcare budget, but it can take 3 months for a cancer patient to get a simple bone scan.
Thanks, but no thanks.
How long does it take for an uninsured cancer patient to get a simple bone scan here?
I voted for Wu but I am now an Independent because Wu has not gotten Oregon it's fair share of Stimulus Money. The State of Washington got 12 Times Stimulus of Oregon... See http://www.recovery.org
We need to Vote David Wu out in 2010, he is not doing his job for Oregon.
So Anonymous Coward, you're voting Wyden out of office too? The Senate had more to do with how the stimulus was directed, so that's the answer, start all over with people who are unfamiliar with the process and have no seniority. I am just sure that will get you what you want. As for the person having trouble getting a bone scan, how in this world can that be Wu's fault? Are you a Veteran? If so, contact his office, they will get the VA involved. If not, call your State Legislator and find out why your insurance company won't approve it. If you're not insured, still call your State Legislator and find out what resources are available for you NOW in your area.
You all want to blame the government for everything and then say you don't want anything from them. It's no wonder so many of them won't hold town hall meetings. Their constituents have become mobs of angry people. Angry over things that have been stewing for decades and are now being addressed. Instead of being glad things are now being dealt with - the good, the bad, the ugly - you're all acting as though these problems JUST came up. Newsflash: they've been simmering for a while and starting 2 wars, fueled by gross overspending directed towards companies doing business with the former administration before they were in place is what tipped this Nation into the goat rodeo they're dealing with now.
