Prince William County [VA] has had an immigration law similar to Arizona’s S.B. 1070. Similar to the S.B. 1070, Prince William County’s ordinance required police to check the immigration status of those they had “probable cause” to suspect were undocumented immigrants.
Eric Byler’s documentary 9500 Liberty highlights the economic and public safety costs of implementing PWC's immigration law. The film depicts the story of ordinary citizens of Prince William County, social activists, business owners and politicians that banded together to repeal the controversial ‘probable clause’ mandate. Ultimately, the PWC immigration law was modified in 2008 so that instead of questioning only those they suspected of being undocumented immigrants, officers were required to question all criminal suspects about their immigration status once arrested. Given the parallels of the PWC’s immigration law to Arizona’s S.B. 1070, 9500 Liberty will be screened across the country, especially in Arizona.
On July 17th, the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) will be screening 9500 Liberty to the general public. The event will be from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm, and will be located at the Quad Cinema 34 W. 13th St New York, NY. For more information, check this link out: http://www.9500liberty.com/index.html
