Edward Chen passes Senate Committee again

For the second time, President Obama's nominee for the Northern District of California, Magistrate Edward Chen, has cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee by a party line vote of 12-7. If you'll remember, Chen's nomination has been stalled by Republicans who have criticized Chen for his public statements and background as a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union. From an editorial in the San Francisco Gate:

Does discrimination have to play a part in keeping America safe?

(From the Restore Fairness blog) In a response to the December 25th bomb attempt on Northwest flight 253 to Detroit, the Transportation Security Administration announced a new screening policy that requires “enhanced screening” of passengers flying into the United States from 14 countries considered either “state sponsors of terror” or “countries of interest”

DC - Support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act!

Help end job discrimination!

It’s 2010, and in the majority of the country, there are no legal protections from workplace discrimination for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people!

This will change with the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a federal bill that will ban job discrimination nationwide on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.  We have the votes in Congress, we have a president who will sign the bill, now we just need to keep the momentum going!

Use Your ImaginAsian

Over the last six months, I have been approached by friends to either create a blog or to write as a guest contributor to their blogs. However, I resisted because I was always preoccupied with writing preliminary exams, preparing lecture notes, or any other banal task common to a graduate student.  And to be frank, I wasn’t quite sure anyone was really interested in what I had to say outside of the classroom. So why the change of mind? ImaginAsian.

Shake up in CA Attorney General's race?

There's a rumor floating around that could have major ramifications for quite a few progressive AAPI candidates. According to the SFGate, Bay Area Congresswoman Jackie Speier could be setting her sights on a run for the State's Attorney General.

Too Much At Stake for Complacency - A Call to Action for Immigration Reform

Look at "those illegals,” my friend said jokingly while he was dropping me off to the Bart Station. He pointed at two Mexican immigrants standing against the fence. Although it was a joke, I was extremely angry. Yet, I was defenseless and vulnerable. I simply laughed with him and stayed casual as if nothing happened. Once he dropped me off, I wondered if he would treat me differently if he knew that I’m also “illegal.”
