LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Solidarity Walk for Pa Lee Klo, 20 years old, Murdered Last Friday in Georgia

(Clarkston, GA) -- The Karen Community of Georgia issued a press release inviting the public to participate in a Solidarity Walk on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 5 p.m. to commemorate the life of Pa Lee Klo, a twenty-year-old Karen refugee who was senselessly killed last week in a driveby shooting outside of his home in Clarkston in Dekalb County, Georgia.

Dekalb County is home to one of the largest refugee populations in the South. The community has been increasingly concerned by the growing violence in the Clarkston apartment houses where Pa Lee Klo was killed.

The Golden State of Marriage

My husband and I were pigging out at our favorite all-you-can-eat Korean bbq when the first text came in, “So when’s the big reception!”

We immediately knew what our friend was referring to: Perry vs. Schwarzenegger and the drive to overturn Prop 8, the ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in California.

Ground zero and the mosque — does the court of law have it right?

From Restore Fairness blog.

Welcoming a new mosque near the site of 9/11 attacks is seen by those opposed to it as a symbol of terrorist victory and a weak U.S. On the other hand, supporters see the openness and tolerance of this act as a powerful bridge to interfaith interaction and peace. But, plain and simply, to the court of law religious tolerance isn’t up for debate.

Hansen Clarke wins MI primary

Great news out of Detroit. State Senator Hansen Clarke has won an upset victory in his overwhelmingly Democratic district. He is poised to become the next Asian American in Congress. Clarke attended the first APAP Detroit meeting last year. We;ll definitely think of ways we can help out his campaign.

Clarke upsets Cheeks Kilpatrick in key race; end

of a political dynasty?

The following op-ed was published on New American Media about the need to make sure that Comprehensive Immigration Reform includes LGBT Families!

Documentary Film Screening: 9500 Liberty

Prince William County [VA] has had an immigration law similar to Arizona’s S.B. 1070. Similar to the S.B. 1070, Prince William County’s ordinance required police to check the immigration status of those they had “probable cause” to suspect were undocumented immigrants.

API and the Oscar Grant Case: Memories of Michael Cho

There are certain dates I remember particularly well.  There was one date, a very particular January 1st, which I remember.  I remember being shocked, reading in the news that only the day before, on New Year’s Eve, a young promising man of color had been shot to death by the police.  This young man had left behind a family, many friends, and a distraught and angry community.  The shooting had happened only a few cities away from me, and the young man posed no immediate threat to anybody, including the police.
