LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Get on the Bus for Health Care: Asian-Americans Travel to DC this Thursday for National Rally

So many things happening this week in health care! First, an incredible poll in the New York Times shows that most people support the  public option and are willing to pay higher taxes to make it happen. Check out the New York Times/CBS News poll

Secondly, legislation is being drafted. The House Tri-Committee and the Senate HELP Committee released drafts with the public option. Senator Baucus of the Senate Finance committee released a bipartisan bill with the coop plan, a weak alternative to the public option. For an overview, go to Health Care Proposals in the NY Times.

Of course, opponents to health care are using fear tactics.  They say that reform will ration care.  The fact is, private insurers "ration" care by denying coverage for needed medications, denying prevention care, and the worst of all - denying 50 million Americans access to care.  All of this leads to higher costs in the end.

So, let's take a stand for health care before it's too late.  Here are two important events this week. And here's how Asian-Americans are stepping up in New York City.

Thursday, JUNE 25th - "Health Care Can't Wait" National Rally, Washington D.C.
Join grassroots supporters from across the country for the biggest health care rally in US History to be followed by a New York Town Hall with Congress members. Health Care for America NOW is organizing FREE buses. Reserve your seat and be part of history.
In New York City, delegations from Organization of Chinese Americans, led by Liz OuYang, are joining with teams from South Asians for Opportunity, led by Theresa Thanjan, Asian Americans for Obama, and other progressive AAPI groups to rally in DC.
Props especially to Neha Dewan of NYCforChange, who will be leading a delegation of Asian-American community leaders to meet with Rep. Jerrold Nadler. What are we asking for in particular? Making sure the elimination of health care disparities based on race or socio-economic status does not get left behind in the rush to expand access and control costs.
To join us on these delegations, sign up for the NYC bus today! We leave from Union Square at 6 AM - Contact naomi.rothwell@gmail.com ASAP.
(PS We're always looking for a VIDEOGRAPHER to document this historic event and others.)

SAT, JUNE 27th - Organizing for America National Health Service Day, New York City
Here in NYC, volunteers are needed to help with health reform education, postcard canvassing, videotaping stories, and phone banking.  To find an event in your neighborhood, go to barackobama.com
If you know of other events happening in the weeks to come, please let me know!

Please note these are my opinions, not official APAP stances - would love to hear from people on what they think of the public option, the rally and the Day of Service.
