Grading the Websites of AAPI Candidates: NYC Edition

There are lots of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders running for local, state and federal office all across the country in 2009 and 2010. In hopes of analyzing each campaign’s new media strategy, we’ll be posting a series of entries with their websites and other on-line presence.  (If anyone knows HTML and can help me make this into a pretty grid, please let me know. I eventually want to have one master grid for all AAPI candidates around the country running for office.)

We start with the multiple candidates running for office in New York City this fall. The hot race is in City Council District 20 in Flushing. That's the race to replace City Councilmember John Liu. Of course, John, who is running for City Comptroller, has the most sophisticated new media operations of all the candidates running. He's covering almost all his bases. On the other hand, Evergreen Chou, the green candidate, barely has a presence with only a Myspace Page. If that were the only thing I saw from his campaign, I would definitely think he's not serious about winning. It’s interesting that only three candidates (Liu, P.J. Kim and Yen Chou) had set up ways to process online donations. That seems like a pretty basic component these days.

Primary Election: September 15, 2009

General Election: November 3, 2009

*** UPDATED 8-11-09: Oops, forgot to include Kevin Kim and James Wu. Kevin is running in the 19th and he's done a great job of building a web presence. James Wu is running in the 20th, but I was unable to find even a basic webpage for him. I have also included the twitter and facebook addresses for Margaret Chin.

Just a note- there is actually a reason in this day and age not to have online donations. They cost a campaign money with each donation, and campaigns like Margaret Chin's which max out on grassroots local donations don't need to spend money on credit card vendors for online donors.

In addition, her site does link to her twitter account and to facebook, where she has an account. It's just not well placed on the site.

Oh come on grassroots guy. That's a terrible rationalization for not having an online donor. That's like saying Obama shouldn't have had online donors because of the cost incurred on the transaction fee. BTW, I still can't find her Twitter and Facebook accounts. Do you have links?

Margaret Chin twitter and facebook.

Although I think "hard to find" is synonymous with "not on the website."

I'm really curious as to why you think online donations are not worth it for local campaigns.  I can see myself making the same decision, but not for something like transaction costs.  Can you explain your reasoning from a different angle?

And for donor link a shorter one is: www.pjkim.com/donate
