Help Defeat Proposition 8!

Friends of API Equality - LA: WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP DEFEAT PROP 8 DURING THIS FINAL WEEK BEFORE ELECTION DAY? 1. Join an API Equality – LA phone bank. We know that many of you would like to help out with the most effective outreach effort so we are asking that everyone please sign up to do some phone banking to make sure we get out our side to vote No on Prop 8 on Election Day – this is absolutely key to our victory!!! Thursday, October 30, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., Communications Workers of America, Local 9000, 5855 Venice Blvd., L.A. Sunday (November 2) 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, 3200 W. Temple Street, L.A. Monday (November 3) 6:30 – 9:00 p.m., Lambda Legal, 3325 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 1300, L.A. To sign up or for more information about phone banks, contact Angelo Mathay at (323) 860-7358 or angelo.api.ela@gmail.com. 2. Bring our message to Koreatown! On Friday, October 31 before your Halloween festivities, line the streets of Koreatown holding No on 8 signs during rush hour traffic. Meet at the intersection of Normandie and Wilshire (Metro accessible) 4:30 – 6 p.m. 3. Take to the Streets on Election Day! Join an army of volunteers throughout the state talking to voters at key polling places to remind them to vote No on Prop 8 and answer any of their questions.  We need to make sure that people are not confused about how to vote.  There will be early morning and late afternoon shifts when foot traffic is heaviest.  Volunteers must attend a mandatory training that will be offered four times the weekend of November 1-2 that will include critical information about what activity is legally permitted around polling places.  To RSVP for training and Election Day shifts contact Kat Khommarath at (323) 860-7348 or kkhommarath@lagaycenter.org. 4. Celebrate our Victory on Election Night The Music Box @ Fonda 6126 Hollywood Blvd. (near the Hollywood and Vine Metro station) Los Angeles, CA  90028 6 p.m - midnight Hosted bar and food and large screen TVs to view the returns Free for campaign volunteers RSVP at: www.lagaycenter.org/election (see attached flyer for details) THE PAST FEW WEEKS HAVE BROUGHT A FLURRY OF ACTIVITY FOR API EQUALITY – LA AS WE SPRINT TOWARD ELECTION DAY: We held a successful press conference on October 23 featuring leading Asian Pacific American elected officials, leaders, clergy and celebrities at the Japanese American National Museum.  Immediately preceding the press conference, 75 volunteers lined the streets of Little Tokyo holding "No on 8" signs.  You can view the press conference at: http://www.youtube.com/user/apiequalityla. A week earlier, Asian clergy against Prop 8 also held a multi-lingual press conference at Centenary Methodist Church.  Both press conferences were widely covered by mainstream, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Filipino media. More than 200 APIELA volunteers have been participating in phone banks to urge Asian American voters to defend the freedom to marry by rejecting Prop 8 on Election Day.  These include volunteers mobilized by our coalition partners such as Asian Pacific American AIDS Intervention Team, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, the Japanese American Citizens League, Little Tokyo Service Center, Satrang, AAQWA, Pride at Work, Lambda Legal, and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association, plus students from five area colleges. At an October 19 house party in Silverlake, hosted by several veteran Filipino American community activists, nearly $12,000 was raised (including a matching contribution of $4,600 from a donor) for the No on 8 Campaign. A team of 22 volunteers distributed 1,300 bilingual fliers and spoke with Asian voters about Prop 8 in at four shopping malls in the San Gabriel Valley this past weekend. AND OUR EFFORTS ARE WORKING! A recent poll showed that 57% of likely Asian voters report that they will vote no on 8 and only 32% will vote for the measure. BUT IT'S DOWN TO THE WIRE.  For all California voters there are conflicting polls, one showing that we're slightly ahead and one showing us behind.  We have closed the fundraising gap, but a pro-Prop 8 supporter has recently offered to match up to $1 million in donations for the other side. VICTORY IS WITHIN OUR REACH, BUT WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.  JOIN US IN MAKING HISTORY! Marshall Wong & Doreena Wong Co-Chairs API Equality-LA The Village at Ed Gould Plaza 1125 N.
