LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

Highlights 2009

Highlights from 2009: In addition to our regular meetings, mixers and rallies held all across the country, these are some of the more noteworthy projects we worked on:

November - Reform Immigration for America Conference Call: Working with a coalition of organizations around the country, APAP organized 14 house parties around the country to hear Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez discuss immigration reform

October - 2009 Media Award: At a gala awards ceremony in Denver, Vincent Who? wins the 2009 Media Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education

September - APAP's blog, in association with Angry Asian Man (angryasianman.com) lists the 10 top colleges for AAPI student activism. Website traffic hits an all-time high of 10,000 per week.

July-August: Health Care Reform: APAP helped organize phonebanks, rallies and other events around the country

May - House Party with Obama Administration: Over eighty homes participated in a conference call with top Obama Administration officials Tina Tchen of the Office of Public Engagement and Assistant Cabinet Secretary Tammy Duckworth. Also joining the call were Congressmembers Judy Chu and Joe Sestak, as well as introductory remarks provided by Konrad Ng.

February - Completion of Vincent Who?: Recognizing the importance of new media, APAP produced our first documentary, a feature that explores the impact of the 1982 Vincent Chin hate murder on the development of the modern AAPI political movement. The documentary features interviews with more than 30 veteran and emerging leaders from the East Asian, South Asian and Southeast Asian communities. Since then, the 

January 20th – Inaugural AAPI Grassroots Gala in Washington DC: After a long and hard fought election cycle, over 200 grassroots activists from around the country came and celebrated the election of President Obama and further build the ties amongst the various grassroots organizers from around the country. Guests enjoyed fine food and drinks and the inspirational work of several Asian American artists. The evening ended with a Bollywood dance party.
