There were 12 participants at this lively house party, including APAP board members, students, business and community leaders. Following the call, participants discussed issues of concern and three key issues rose to the top: Immigration, healthcare and education, particularly the funding of schools.
The group also discussed ways to AAPIs and APAP members could get more involved in both issue campaigns and electoral politics. APAP board members shared the success of the APAP internship program which places students on progressive candidate campaigns. The group brainstormed new ways that other non-student members could participate in such campaigns and suggested house party phone banking, web actions and op-eds in ethnic media and local newspapers.
Finally, the group decided that while immigration, education and health care are all important issues, our limited time and resources would be best spent supporting progressive API candidates, in particular the nomination of Goodwin Liu to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and the election of Dr. Ami Bera to California’s 3rd Congressional District. We are looking forward to getting together again soon to put this talk into action!
