John Lim announces run for Oregon governor

The nominees are starting to line-up to replace term-limited Democratic Governor Ted Kulongoski in Oregon. This week saw the entry of former Democratic Governor John Kitzhaber who is running for a record third time. Now former Republican State Senator John Lim is throwing his hat in the ring.

Lim, 73, said his experience gives him an advantage over the other candidates. “I am the oldest and wisest,” he said.

He’s spent 13 years in the Legislature, starting with two terms in the Senate from 1993 to 2000 before term limits – later ruled unconstitutional – ended his political career.

Multnomah County commissioners appointed Lim to Senate District 25 in January 2004 after Sen. John Minnis resigned to take a job as director of the state’s Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.

Instead of running as the incumbent, Lim ran for and won House District 50. When Lim ran for re-election in 2006, he bested his two opponents with 63 percent of the vote.

However, last November, he lost his bid for a third term to political newcomer Greg Matthews, a local firefighter and small business owner.

Most political analysts rate this as a Democratic hold.
