John Liu Accused of Playing "the Immigrant Card"

New York City Councilman John Liu, who is running for City Controller, just launched a new biographical video on his website. In addition to hearing testimonials from his constituents, the video goes on and to talk about his success story, including coming to America at the age of five and the discrimination he faced.

"When I was 7, I got my first job working in [a] garment factory, and I learned firsthand why they called the place a 'sweatshop,'" Liu says. "I like to say I was taught in public school, but I was educated in a sweatshop."

Interspersed with anecdotes from his supporters and highlights of his career are bits of Liu's life story: A childhood memory of having kids stare him down and spit in his face, his anger at a lawmaker's tirade denouncing Asians as "illegal aliens" and "criminal smugglers."

"I know what discrimination feels like - and I don't want anyone else to feel it," Liu says. "This city makes a promise with us: It doesn't matter where you or your parents came from. What matters is how far you want to go."

That sounds like the typical American Dream story.

So why does the Daily News saddle it with the headline, "Contoller candidate John Liu plays immigrant card in campaign video"?

Since when is telling your life story playing the immigrant card?

I'm curious as to what they define "immigrant card" as.

I think it's more bashing of brown people, sort of like "the race card". In the past, people were lauded for coming to this country and succeeding. Now it's being devalued and trivialized as a game. These right wingers really just don't like hearing about them "foreigners".

Unless they hide all traces of their cultural identity and adopt a ridiculous american accent (aka Bobby Jindal)

Then the right-wingers worship them...

Though Liu is the first Chinese councilman who has chaired the Transportation Committee, Chinatown residents have suffered horrible traffic in the last seven years. Traffic accidents happened everyday in Chinatown. In the middle of 2008, the death caused by traffic accident was almost once a month. Just in 2009, from January to May, there were already three deaths and more than twenty badly injured by traffic accidents in that area. We didn’t see him doing anything practical to improve the situation.

This has indicated that he hasn’t fulfilled his duty as a Chair of the Transportation Committee, nor does he care about Chinese Americans.

So he is not qualified to play immigrants card.

Peter, how would you remedy the traffic situation in Chinatown?  I'm from NYC too and I know the traffic there is bad...but I don't see see what the City Council can do about it.

Don't forget that John Liu was one of the key figures behind congestion pricing to cut traffic in Manhattan but that was voted down.

Unfortunately Peter is not understanding that traffic deaths are not discriminatory.  It was such a tragic story to see of what had happened in the Taconic Parkway.  4 young girls and 3 older gentleman had died after the mother of the younger children was driving drunk down the wrong way on the Taconic.

Chinatown is a dangerous place to walk and has faced an uphill battle with roadways like Canal Street and Bowery that have long been frustrating for people like me growing up through out its development.  Councilman Liu has been quite outspoken on changes but cannot affect change alone when he speaks up on issues that are not necessarily within his own City Council district.

He has spoken about ways to solve matters such as with the Community Board 2 about the parking, tunnel traffic, and reclaiming Park Row. It is a team effort with the local elected official such as Senator Squadron, Assembly Speaker Silver, and Boro President Stringer.  Even the rulings or job of the District Attorney Morganthau are important for what may promote as issues.  Councilman John Liu has taken on a legislative role with efforts like the Idle Free NYC.

Yes, he has spoken too much but we didn’t see him doing any practical work.

Yes, the traffic situation in Chinatown has been very tough and we can not expect it can get better in one day, but there are still some practical works that can improve the situation.

On March 1, 2009, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Chinatown has to write to New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) directly and told them that there are still something they would do to reduce traffic accidents, such as, limited the speed by setting camera or adding speed bump in some areas, add more park spaces, extend longer time for pedestrian traffic lights as there are many seniors in Chinatown, and so on.

Manhattan Borough Commissioner of DOT Ms Margaret Forgione has accepted these suggestions and promised to the Association that the DOT will to do it. Did John Liu involve in this communication between Chinese community and the DOT? Did he show any support?

Senator Squadron is a new elected Senator and just started to work since this year. He admitted that there are lots works need to do to improve the traffic situation (because politicians like John Liu didn’t do any practical works to improve it in the past) and he had to do overloaded works to catch up.

Did you see today's news article: I think they knew it was all a LIE.  I guess they were just waiting to get all the details of his REAL childhood.  (From his own parents no less) I can't believe it.  I was thinking about voting for him...now he can forget that!!!

That article is not entirely truthful:

Who do you think you are? You can force me give up or shut up. I have told you before: here is USA, not in Communist China. You can not use the way of Communist Cult to repress anybody who speak dissidents. You can only give your opinion.

Now you said Daily News’ article on Sunday is not entirely truthful. Can you explain which part of the article is not true? The journalist just copied what John Liu said in the video and what his parents said. Even John Liu himself didn’t say what in the article is not true, how could you say that?

If you are not able to explain it, it then will add one more liar in the event.

Calvin Prashad on Sun, 08/23/2009 - 19:34

Two things

1. Calm down, I'm trying to reason with you.  I asked you for evidence behind your claim on the other post and your defensive response tell me you have none.

2.  Read the press release.  It is common practice for factory bosses to force their workers to work at home to a. avoid labor inspection b. get around maximum hour laws

3.  Working in such conditions and involving your children in such conditions is a source of shame within the community.  This is why everyone's story is differing.  Why they would interview the sweatshop boss is beyond me.  It's clear that the owners won't be telling the truth.

4.  Yes, this is the USA.  In this country we have "innocent until proven guilty".  Now show me some evidence or it will become apparent who the liar is.
