update It's official. Just got this email from his campaign:
Dear Friend, It's confirmed! Joined by a broad and diverse base of supporters, Councilman John Liu formally announced his campaign to serve as the next Comptroller of the City of New York. “Now more than ever, we need a Comptroller who will root out waste and inefficiency as budget cuts are imposed, and ensure accountability and equal opportunity as billions in stimulus funding arrive," John said earlier today. "With my professional background in finance and my experience in city government, combined with my demand for fairness and equality, I will be that Comptroller. I will be the Comptroller who will scrutinize the details without losing sight of the big picture." Tune in TONIGHT to see/hear John talk about his plans: 6:30 PM (EST) on WCBS Channel 2 News (11:00 PM if basketball game goes overtime), and 11:00 PM (EST) on 98.7 KISS-FM Radio Also, attached are reports about John's campaign. Sincerely, Mei Ru
Here's some interesting news out of the Big Apple about New York City Council member John Liu's race for Public Advocate. It turns out, he may not be running for that office after all. According to this article in the NY Politicker, there is a rumor that:
John Liu was dropping out of the public advocate’s race and going to announce on on Sunday that he’s running for comptroller instead.
To back up the rumor, it seems he's contacted the Campaign Finance Board to change the office he is seeking to undetermined.
I'm not sure what Liu will do with all that money he's raised, but if he does make the switch, it won't make some people happy, including Queens Democratic Party Executive Secretary Mike Reich:
Reich, who said he has yet to hear from Liu about his plans, lamented the idea that there might be three Queens Council members running to succeed Comptroller Bill Thompson - Liu, Melinda Katz and David Weprin - suggesting the trio will "dliute each other and cancel each other out, " leading to loss for everyone.
Liu is a rising star among the young AAPI politicians. We anxiously await to hear what he decides.
