Dear Friend,
This week I won the Democratic nomination to become the next
Comptroller of New York City. I'm elated, and truly honored and
grateful for your support.
During this long and hard-fought campaign, we focused on the issues
and the challenges in a difficult economy, and on my qualifications
for the office and my vision for New York. Along the way we won the
strong support of New Yorkers of different ethnicities, race, religion
and sexual orientation. I am so proud of the synergy we unlocked with
the broad coalition we built!
Thank you! Together, we will bring change for a better New York City.
Sincerely,
John Liu

WNYC Radio: "John Liu Wins Democratic Runoff for City Comptroller" - 9/30/09

EXCERPT - At the United Federation of Teachers Hall in Lower Manhattan
it was standing room only to see an historic moment the nomination of
an Asian American by the Democratic party for citywide office.
Councilman John Liu said his victory reaffirmed the power of the
American dream for immigrant families like his own. He said, "You'll
have every opportunity to do better for yourself and your family. And
this is certainly the lesson I've learned tonight and it is because of
all of you."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: "John Liu's revival of the Dinkins coalition led
to his primary win" - 10/1/09
<http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2009/10/01/2009-10-01_a_revival_of_the_dinkins_coalition_led_to_john_lius_primary_win_.html>
EXCERPT - Much of Liu's coalition-building went unnoticed by
consultants and media observers who do not understand or respect the
social and cultural movements that form the bedrock of American
politics.
Movement politics attracts people who feel that crucial parts of our
system aren't working for them, be it the courts, the economy, the
schools, the media - or City Hall.
Real activists can spot a fellow movement man from a mile away:
somebody who understands what it takes to wage a long, lonely fight
into the mainstream of power, prosperity and recognition.
Liu, by word, deed and reputation, made himself a trusted ally of the
labor, civil rights, immigration, ethnic empowerment and
good-government movements.

EXCERPT - Liu is heavily favored to win the election in November in
this Democrat-dominated metropolis. If he does, he’d be the first
Asian American elected to New York City-wide public office. Something
that Liu reflected on when he brought his family up to the stage.
“No one appreciates the wonder and possibility of New York City better
than me,” said Liu. “We were taught that the inherent promise of this
city and this country is that if you work hard, meet your obligations
and recognize the social responsibility that belongs to each of us,
that you will have every opportunity to do better for yourself and
your family.”
With an audience filled with everyone from Blacks, Puerto Ricans,
Chinese and Hasidic Jews, Liu has the backing to propel him to victory
in November.
“Thank you, New York! Thank you very much! I will not let you down!”
declared Liu.
