As a progressive Asian American, I've always had mixed feelings about GOP Rep Anh "Joseph" Cao. As a Republican representing an overwhelming Democratic district, Cao was not as extreme as some of his fellow Republicans. In terms of LGBT rights, he co-sponsored both the Hate Crimes Protection Act of 2009 and legislation to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.
Because of this, and his willingness to not spit at and/or belittle every Democrat, earned Cao the enmity and a last-minute barrage of negative ads from Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council. Now, Cao is lashing back, after his recent loss a couple of weeks ago:
"For a conservative Christian organization to attack a Republican pro-life candidate in a general election is as ignorant as it is inexcusable," Cao told Warren Throckmorton, an evangelical Protestant psychologist and author.
Cao was also an active member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Perhaps he should have switched to the Democrats when he was first elected, as opposed to staying in the party of the wingnuts.
