Congressional Quarterly has just updated their list of House members and how often the vote with their party leadership. While most of the members who broke party ranks were Democrats in conservative districts, Louisiana Congressman Joseph Cao managed to top the list of Republicans. I guess it's because Cao's district gave President Obama 75 per cent of the vote in 2008
...Louisiana’s Anh “Joseph” Cao — the freshman from New Orleans’ heavily Democratic 2nd District — has a 58 percent party unity score that is the lowest among the 178 House Republicans.
Cao is currently viewed by CQ Politics as the most vulnerable House incumbent in either party: His race is rated as Democrat Favored, meaning the challenging party appears very likely to reclaim the seat. Cao’s 2008 victory was greatly abetted by the fact that his opponent was Democratic Rep. William J. Jefferson, who was under indictment on a variety of corruption charges for which he was ultimately convicted Aug. 5.
Most recently, Cao sided with the Democrats to oppose building a recycling plant that would have harmed eastern New Orleans. From the press conference:
"We cannot support a project whose business plan is suspect, whose technology has not been fully tested, and whose intent is simply to make a profit on the backs of New Orleans residents, " Cao said.
I wonder if the health care bill will be one of these votes. If you are in his district, make sure to keep up the pressure. Maybe miracles do happen.
