Affter Vincent Chin, the murder of Filipino American postal worker Joseph Ileto is arguably the most high-profile hate crime committed against an Asian American. On August 10, 1999, Buford Furrow, a self professed white supremacist, went on a rampage at the North Valley Jewish Community Center where he shot and injured five individuals. Shortly thereafter, he gunned down Ileto who was making his rounds. The shocking murder gained so much attention that even President Clinton sent condolences.
Since the attack, the Ileto family along with several civil rights organizations have been working to eradicate hate crimes in Los Angeles County and raise awareness across the nation, including the establishment of a scholarship in his name.
It's been ten years since then and the Ileto family, along with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center is hosting a 10-year commemorative event.
Much like Vincent Chin, we must remember cases like this. In fact, Joseph's mom, Lillian Ileto is featured in our documentary, Vincent Who? Here's the information, in case you can attend:
| Event Name | 10 Year Commemorative Event for Joseph Ileto and the North Valley Jewish Community Center Victims |
| Event Description | On behalf of the family of Joseph Ileto and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, we formally invite you to join us at the 10th Annual Commemorative Event for Joseph Ileto and the North Valley Jewish Community Center Victims. This very special event will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009, from 9:30AM – 1:00PM at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center’s newly renovated community room.
This year, we will pay tribute to Joseph Ileto, who was brutally and senselessly killed ten years ago by a white supremacist, and to the five children and adults who were also shot and severely wounded at the North Valley Jewish Community Center. The plan for this year’s event is to hold a press conference on the actual day of the shooting, August 10th @ 10 am. We will open the remembrance with prayers in memory of Joseph Ileto and then hear from the Ileto family and victims of the NVJCC as they reflect on the past 10 years. Elected officials, such as Congresswoman Judy Chu, Assemblymembers Mike Eng and Warren Furutani have also been invited to speak and share their thoughts with the families.
After the press conference, there will be a discussion around hate crimes in our communities lead by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations. This will give the audience an opportunity to see how far we have come and where we need to go.
To accept our invitation, please RSVP with Shukry Cattan at (213) 241-0269 or scattan@apalc.org as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration.
