In front of a diverse crowd of over 1,500 enthusiastic friends, family and supporters, Congressmember Judy Chu (CA-32) held an in-district swearing in ceremony at East LA College today. It was a homecoming of sorts as Judy taught at this school for many years, starting in the 80's and up until her election to the California Assembly.
Emceeing the event was her husband, CA State Assemblymember Mike Eng who did a great job of keeping the jokes coming and the energy flowing. Of course, there were a ton of elected officials to introduce, including Congressman Adam Schiff, State Comptroller John Chiang, State Assemblymember Ed Herandez, as well as a ton of citywide and local officials from throughout Los Angeles County.
Cabinet Secretary for Labor and long-time friend and mentor, Hilda Solis, did the honors of administering the Oath of Office. Hilda has been a friend and ally of Judy for over twenty years and it was obvious that the two families had become close. Joining them on stage were Maria-Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the L.A. County Federation of Labor, who pointed out that it was a Latino-majority district that sent the first Chinese American woman to Congress.
All-in-all, a great event, even if it was well over 100 degrees in the San Gabriel Valley. Here are some pictures.
