UPDATED (July 15, 2009): Judy Chu wins the general election. Click here for more details.
In the special election to replace recently appointed Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis in Congress in California's 32nd Congressional District, California Board of Equalization Member and APAP PAC endorsed candidate Judy Chu has won the Democratic primary. With 75% of the precincts in, Chu leads her closest Democratic opponent, State Senator Gil Cedillo, by 3,300 votes, leading California political blog Calitics to call the race for her.
In California's "jungle primary" system, all candidates for all parties are listed on a single ballot in the special election. If no single candidate gets over 50% of the vote, then the top vote-getters from the top two parties go to a run-off. Judy Chu will face Republican Monterey Park City Councilmember Betty Chu (and Judy's cousin by marriage!) in the run-off. However, given the overwhelmingly Democratic bent of the district, most people consider Judy the presumptive next Congresswoman from CD32. Dr. Chu would be the first Chinese American woman in Congress.
Congratulations to Judy Chu, and congratulations to our Glen Fukushima Fellow, Michael Nailat, for all his hard work on the campaign!
Small correction - apparently the top vote-getter of every party goes to the run-off, so there will also be a Libertarian candidate in the July run-off.
