Congresswoman Judy Chu. Sounds great, doesn't it?
After a rough and tumble six-months, ever since President Obama nominated Hilda Solis to be his Labor Secretary, California Board of Equalization member Judy Chu has finally won her race to represent CA-32 in Congress. She overcame a tough primary with Gil Cedillo and a primary opponent, Betty Chu, who was running on Judy's name. According to this CQ Report:
Chu had 62 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting in the low-turnout election, according to local and state election office Web sites. She enjoyed a wide lead over Republican Betty Chu,, who had 33 percent, and Libertarian Chris Agrella, who had 5 percent.
I went to the victory party tonight at a restaurant in Covina where about 250-300 of her supporters had gathered to celebrate. It was a good diverse mix of folks, ethnically balanced, just like the district. You can tell from the look on Judy's face, she was relieved and so excited to tackling this new challenge.
A few points that she shared:
At the request of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Judy will be headed to DC on Wednesday (today)
She will be sworn in on Thursday
She has invited her campaign staff to travel out there with her
There will be a special swearing in her district on Aug. 30th where Hilda Solis will do the official honors
Anyway, we'll try to have more updates tomorrow, including more pics. Until then, let's look forward to having this progressive AAPI leader fighting for her constituents and the progressive movement!
