MOCA is dedicated to reclaiming, preserving, and interpreting the history and culture of Chinese and their descendants in the United States. Through an ongoing and historical dialogue that shapes MOCA’s collections, programs and exhibitions, people of all backgrounds are able to explore the diversity and complexity of American history and culture, while gaining unique access to the images, papers, oral histories and artifacts which document the story.

 

Summary


MOCA is looking for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator. He or she maintains excellent working relationships with the media and community businesses/organizations. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator will manage and engage in a range of communications projects from media outreach to publications and web development.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Working with staff to plan strategically for communicating with press, community businesses/organizations and other key audiences;
  • Identifying opportunities for securing media coverage and working alone or with a media outreach consultant to secure regular coverage for the museum;
  • Regularly updating MOCA’s website and reorganizing content as necessary;
  • Working closely with MOCA Development staff to create fundraising-related communications;
  • Identifying, building and maintaining relationships with targeted journalists;
  • Drafting, editing and proofreading web content, publications and media outreach materials;
  • Maintaining up-to-date press lists and systems;
  • Cultivating media contacts and maintaining a media database in New York City and throughout the United States and internationally;
  • Creating and writing all press releases in English and Chinese;
  • Maintaining press kits;
  • Creating press release distribution system;
  • Maintaining and updating MOCA’s programs and exhibitions in relevant publications (both print and digital) ;
  • Fulfilling media inquiries;
  • Keeping MOCA’s presence in social media tools updated and monitoring these pages to make sure there is no inappropriate content being added;
  • Developing a Chinatown community outreach plan for MOCA;
  • Building MOCA’s community partners list.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 2+ years in Communications and Outreach
  • Bi-lingual / bi-literate in Chinese preferred
  • Experience in one or more of the following: communications, marketing, or public relations
  • Familiarity with website design, maintenance, and e-communications
  • Quick and clear thinker; highly organized and detail-oriented; proficient, friendly, and diplomatic communicator
  • Able to take the lead, work on numerous complex tasks simultaneously, and flourish under pressure
  • Ability to interact with all levels of personnel; high level of professionalism
  • Flexible, proactive, and resourceful
  • Excellent verbal, written, and keyboard skills; proficient in Microsoft Office tools
