Here's something to get us all ready for the National AAPI House Parties that will take place this Sunday: Congressman Mike Honda and APIAVote's Naomi Tacuyan Underwood speak with Jennifer Ludden about Asian Americans in politics on NPR's Tell Me More.
For years, activists and scholars have lamented the lack of involvement of Asians-Americans in the American political landscape. But, the group has become an increasingly visible force in the political scene. As Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage month draws to a close, Rep. Mike Honda, a Democrat from California, and political activist Naomi Tacuyan Underwood, discuss the evolving role of Asian-Americans in politics.
While some of what's discussed may seem slightly basic to us, it's definitely heartening to see a major news program address Asian American political involvment (which, as Congressman Honda points out, is usually left out of the discussion altogether). And the segment strikes a nice balance between the different perspectives of the older Asian American generation, as represented by Congressman Honda, and the younger generation, as represented by Naomi (who was recently featured as one of Angry Asian Man's 30 Most Influential Asian Americans Under 30 series).
Also in the same program is a remembrance of Dr. Ronald Takaki, with commentary from his close friend and mentee, Larry Hajime Shinagawa, who now heads the University of Maryland's Asian American Studies Program.
