Pol-File #2: Laura Shin

Greetings Readers, Here is the second installation of APAP's newest weekly feature, Pol-Files. To view last week's pol-file on Jennifer Javier and to understand a little more about why we have created this feature, click here laura-shin What is your name? Laura Shin What is your current position? Grants Director for Homeland Security and Public Safety at the Office of Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa What are some interesting jobs you have had in the past? Middle School Teacher and Personal Trainer What is your educational background? I have a B.A. in English Literature and teaching credential from UC San Diego and a J.D. from Southwestern Law School. I am also a student of life. What skills do you think are necessary for your job? Ultimately, you need the ability to create strong relationships with your grantors by proving to be a good steward of funds. In addition, it would help if you had a fabulous memory, were detail-oriented, organized, and a problem solver. How did you get your start? I went to the Hollywood Bowl with some friends and met somebody that worked in the Mayor's Office. She told me about the opportunity, I applied and now it's been over three years. Do you have any role models? I have many role models, but I want to acknowledge my parents as my character role models. They are people that live lives of integrity, honesty, humility and decency and they have been a strong influence in my life. Describe your typical day. My typical day can consist of phone calls and emails to grantors at the State and in D.C.; attending local City Council hearings; reviewing reports; and meetings with my grant team, city depts and grant recipients. Who are your favorite politicians? President Barack Obama, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Mayor Cory Booker, and D.C.Chancellor Michelle Rhee. I know that Chancellor Rhee isn't a politician, but she is doing such a great job that I think she should run for office. What do you do with your free time? Movies, golf, and reading.
