Tam Tran Nomination and blog post by: Erin Pangilinan and Gregory Cendana, APALA Executive Director
APAP would like to honor Tam Ngoc Tran with a posthumous award of Unsung Hero. If Tam were alive today, it would be no surprise that she would be receiving this award for her tireless work as a fierce advocate for the DREAM Act.
More about Tam
Tam was born in Germany after her parents were forced to flee Vietnam. She immigrated to the U.S. and grew up in Garden Grove, California. She graduated from Santiago High School, attended Santa Ana College, and transferred to UCLA, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in American Literature and Culture. In 2007, Tam testified before a House subcommittee on immigration and advocated on behalf of the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. As a doctoral student in the American Civilization program at Brown University, she helped found the Brown Immigrants’ Rights Coalition. Tam was an aspiring filmmaker, and produced several short films, including the acclaimed documentary, “Lost and Found.”
Beyond the number of accolades (including an outreach fellowship in her name by the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance and recognition by Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Congressman Mike Honda) that Tam receives during and after her lifetime, Tam was an extraordinary person. She always made time to lend an ear to other Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) facing similar struggles to find ways to help, or simply to just listen to our story. Tam's story has encouraged so many of us to come out from the shadows and break our silences.
