Maybe I should've gone to law school.  After all, it's been a banner week for Asian American and Pacific Islander lawyers and the Obama administration. In addition to the announcements of positions for Jacqueline Nguyen, Edward Chen, Dolly Gee and Ro Khanna, word comes out that Preet Bharara has just been confirmed as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. 

Bharara, 40, has served as Schumer’s chief counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee since 2005. He oversaw the congressional investigation into the Bush administration’s firings of eight U.S. attorneys in 2006, which led to the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Prior to that, Bharara was an assistant U.S. attorney in Manhattan for five years, where he brought criminal cases against Italian-American mobsters and Asian gangs in New York City.

Bharara now takes over an office of more than 200 lawyers who have handled such prominent cases in the past year as the prosecution of Bernie Madoff.  According to this article in the New York Times:

Mr. Bharara was recommended by Mr. Schumer for the powerful post, which has been held in the past by such figures as Robert M. Morgenthau and Rudolph W. Giuliani, and which handles federal cases in Manhattan, the Bronx and six counties north of the city.

Senator Schumer said in a statement: “The Southern District of New York will soon be tasked with one of the most important agendas of any office in the country, and no person is better qualified to take it on than Preet Bharara. He has served the Senate for nearly five years with the utmost intelligence, integrity and effectiveness. I know he will do the same as U.S. attorney.”
