Press Release on AAPI fundraiser with Senator Obama

Dear friends, As we head back to Chicago, I'd like to commend the AAPI community's work and strong turnout during yesterday's reception with Senator Obama at the Mayflower Hotel.  The event was a huge success with rousing remarks and marches of order from Kansas Representative Raj Goyle, Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, VA Secretary Aneesh Chopra, and Congressman Mike Honda to galvanize the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to help elect Barack Obama. Senator Barack Obama discussed his deep ties to the AAPI community.  He spoke of issues important to us including heathcare access, immigration, education, civil rights, and others.  He stated his support for full funding of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. As we head to the convention, I encourage each of you to spread the word about this candidate and his campaign. Please contact us at aapi@barackobama.com to get involved in the empowering the AAPI community to register to vote and get involved in the electoral process. Thanks, Charmaine Manansala   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Senator Obama Holds Fundraiser with Asian American and Pacific Islander Community WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Barack Obama today held a fundraiser with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in Washington, D.C. at the Mayflower Hotel.   Speakers included Representative Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Representative Mike Honda (D-California), who introduced Senator Obama. Obama discussed issues of concern to AAPI voters, including immigration, health care initiatives and federal support for minority-owned businesses.  Obama spoke to his personal connection to the AAPI community, given that his sister is half Indonesian, and his brother-in-law is Chinese Canadian. “Being here is especially meaningful to me because I consider myself to be an honorary AAPI member, and I think I’ve got some pretty good credentials,” Obama noted.
