LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Public Option Needs Our Support; Contact Your Congressmember

In response to the unsatisfactory compromise that Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman (CA-30) recently reached with the Blue Dog Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee, a group of progressives Democrats have signed a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House health care leaders.

Thanks to Talking Points Memo, you can read the letter and the names of the 57 Congressmembers who have signed on. Here's a key excerpt:

We regard the agreement reached by Chairman Waxman and several Blue Dog members of the Committee as fundamentally unacceptable. This agreement is not a step forward toward a good health care bill, but a large step backwards. Any bill that does not provide, at a minimum, for a public option with reimbursement rates based on Medicare rates - not negotiated rates - is unacceptable. It would ensure higher costs for the public plan, and would do nothing to achieve the goal of "keeping insurance companies honest," and their rates down.

The progressives would like to reach 60 signatures. In terms of the AAPI Congressmembers, it's nice to see Mazie Hirono (HI-02), Mike Honda (CA-15) and Judy Chu (CA-32) have all signed on. But we should try to get the others on board, as well.

Doris Matsui (CA-05) - (202) 225-7163

Bobby Scott (VA-03) - (202) 225-8351

Oh, and if you want to try the Republicans, have at it...

Steve Austria (OH-07) - (202) 225-4324

Joseph Cao (LA-02) - (202) 225-6636
