WHY:

In August of 2002, the City of Los Angeles designated the neighborhood just south of the 101 Freeway between Glendale Boulevard and Virgil Avenue as Historic Filipinotown, a.k.a “Hi Fi.” And what makes Filipinotown Filipino? The Pilipino Workers Center (PWC), Public Matters, UCLA’s Center for Remap and Hypercities Los Angeles recently partnered to engage neighborhood youth in multi-media documentation project that mines local narratives to bring the rich Hi Fi culture to the surface. The youth participants of PDUB Productions compiled immigrant perspectives from different time periods to produce mobile Hi Fi Tours.

This project will culminate on Saturday, September 26, with the walking and Jeepney tours, PDUB Production screenings and a “barrio fiesta” style fundraiser for the Pilipino Workers Center aptly themed “Historic Filipinotown: Yesterday, Today + Tomorrow.”  Tour-goers will use the GPS-enabled Nokia tablets to access audio, photos and maps that comprise these Immigrant’s Guides while walking around the neighborhood. This event will also mark the official unveiling of PWC’s original World War II jeepney that will provide tour rides of the historic neighborhood.
