Ravi Sangisetty Set to Run for Congress?

What is it with Asian Americans in Louisiana? Why are so many of them running for office down in the bayou?

In addition to the state's Republican Governor Bobby Jindal and the GOP's Congressman Joseph Cao (LA-02), word comes out that there's another Asian American considering a run for public office, this time it's a Democrat and he's potentially running in the 3rd Congressional District. (Of course, this is all dependent on U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon vacating his seat to launch a bid next year for U.S. Senate.)

The newest name to surface as a potential candidate in the fall 2010 election is that of Ravi Sangisetty, a 27-year-old attorney who grew up in Houma and graduated from Vandebilt Catholic in 1999.

A Democrat, Sangisetty is an associate in McGlinchey Stafford’s New Orleans firm and practices in the commercial-litigation section. Prior to joining the firm, he clerked with U.S. District Judge Stanwood R. Duval Jr. of Houma.

Sangisetty’s parents emigrated from India, and both later obtained doctorates. Sangisetty himself graduated from Princeton in 2003 and LSU Law School in 2006.

As for his bid to potentially replace Melancon, D-Napoleonville, Sangisetty said it’s in a conceptual stage, but he may be ready to speak at further length in the near future.

“I’m just spending a lot of time at home right now discussing it with as many people as possible,” he said.

Unfortunately, it seems that Sangisetty was not so successful in his recent appeal for the public's vote. He and his fiancee, Sarah Chaudhry, were up for the "Win Your Dream Wedding" contest sponsored by US Magazine. While the couple failed to make the three finalists, Sangisetty did reveal some of his high ambitions. When asked to name his favorite celebrity, Sangisetty replied John F. Kennedy's.

I graduated with Ravi from Vandebilt, and he's more than qualified to represent this state. He is an extremely intelligent person, with lots of integrity. He has always been a shining star among his classmates. He has always been able to be open minded enough to look at views from all angles, and always stood strong for what he believed in. I know he will do an excellent job, and I support him 100%.

First of all, good luck because no Democrat is going to win in LA for a long time. Melancon won't beat Vitter, b/c Melancon is basically running as Vitter-lite, or Vitter without the hookers and diapers. He is not expressing hardly any different political change from Vitter, only that he really is a true religious right candidate, while Vitter is like the majority of the "Religious" right. Why would Far Right, Neo-Con, Teabaggers vote for a guy who is only slightly less conservative as vitter, when they can simply get the real thing IN Vitter? It just makes no sense.

SECONDLY, back to this race, this is all for naught, b/c we all know this District won't exist after the census. So whoever wins this race won't be in office for long. This District will be absorbed into the 1st, 6th and 7th, all of whose current Reps will not lose to whoever wins this election.

I went to Louisiana School with Ravi.  First, he got expelled after his junior year for bad behavior.  Meaning he got kicked out of LSMSA and had to go back to his school in Houma.    I would not want someone like this as a political figure in LA.  Second he is a devout Hindu.  I dont have anything against Hindu's, I just dont think you should lie about your religion just because you are running for political office.  Basically he has no morals and is a liar.  Is this who we want representing us?

I've known Ravi for years, and knew him during his time at LSMSA.  He was not expelled, from my recollection, but left on his own choice.  His discipline record was spotless excepting one incident.  I'm sure anyone who would hold that against him never did anything foolish or regrettable when they were 15!  Ravi has always been kind, honest, and involved.  I know his wife as well, and she is one of the most amazing young women I know!  Why should his religion matter?  Ravi is Catholic, attends Mass regularly.  I'm glad that he still culturally is Indian and recognizes his heritage.  Being a "practicing Hindu" includes a wide range of practices, many of which would not be mutually exclusive with a strong Catholic faith.
