KAYA National Retreat Schedule

This is an overview of the KAYA national retreat schedule. Stay tuned for a detailed itinerary.

  • Thursday, July 21: KAYA welcome happy hour in Oakland, meet with KAYA members from all chapters (PM)
  • Friday, July 22: “Moving Together” Workshop Session on KAYA’s Vision and Values (PM)
  • Saturday, July 23: APALA Gala: Celebrate Asian Pacific American labor and community leaders with a reception honoring elected officials, and a Gala Dinner to present the Art Takei, Vincent Foo, and Philip Vera Cruz Awards. (PM)
  • Sunday, July 24: Making an Impact in Our Community: Strategizing session for 2012 and long term goals. (AM)

Frequently asked questions:

Can I still attend the APALA general sessions if I register with the KAYA group rate to attend the National KAYA retreat?
Yes, registering through the KAYA website will admit you to both the APALA general sessions/activities and the National KAYA retreat.

If I attend the KAYA National Retreat sessions will I miss the APALA general sessions?
The KAYA national retreat sessions will be scheduled after or between the APALA general sessions/activities as much as possible. (We want to attend the APALA activities, too!)

What if I only want to attend the APALA general sessions and not the KAYA retreat?
For participants who only want to attend the APALA general sessions and not the KAYA retreat, please register directly on the APALA website.

What’s the APALA Convention all about?

The APALA convention, “Generations United: Our Jobs, Our Rights & Our Future!” is the national convening of Asian Pacific American workers, labor organizers, community allies, elected officials, and young leaders.

Where: July 21-24, 2011 

Where: Marriot City Center, 1001 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94607

This year, APALA’s national convention will feature Obama Administration officials and distinguished guests, including:

  • U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis
  • AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler
  • AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Lee Saunders
  • SEIU President Mary Kay Henry
  • White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) Executive Director Kiran Ahuja

This year, APALA’s national convention will:

  • Dialogue with elected officials, labor, community, and young leaders on the economy, immigration, education, and worker solidarity
  • Unite to fight against right-wing attacks with a labor march around Oakland
  • Host a networking and job fair with career and internship opportunities in the labor, APA, and progressive movement
  • Pair young leaders with labor organizers/workers through the launch of APALA’s Generations United Mentorship
  • Celebrate Asian Pacific American labor and community leaders with a reception honoring elected officials, and a Gala Dinner to present the Art Takei, Vincent Foo, and Philip Vera Cruz Awards.
