Report on AAPI Roadtrip for Obama

Photos from Sunday Coordinator and APA for Progress member Jay Chen brings us this report on the AAPI Roadtrip for Obama this past weekend: We had a fantastic turnout: 86 people came, the bulk from Los Angeles but with about a dozen hardy individuals from San Francisco and another half dozen from San Diego/OC. After a quick breakfast in front of Siena Suites (where we were joined by Kelly Hu and met by a journalist from The World Journal) we headed off for our Regional staging area, a large park a few miles west of Chinatown. After a quick training session with other volunteers we split off to our "turf" and received a few more instructions on turning out the early vote. Then we were let loose on suburban Las Vegas. Our group visited around 3600 homes and spoke with about 1500 individuals on Saturday. While there were distinctions between regions, overall the results were very positive! (we later learned on Sunday that 62% of the early voters who voted Saturday were Dems!) Saturday evening everyone met at Firefly for tapas and drinks, and leaders from the campaign came too, including Charmaine Manasala, Stanley Toy, and Manita Rawat. Everyone split up for the night, though many people seemed to end up at Treasure Island for Mystere. Several cars had to leave Sunday morning but we still had about 50 people on hand for sign-waving in front of Chinatown plaza, including Kelly. It was awesome to hear and generate all the honking support, and the occasional one fingered salute from the angry SUV driver only confirmed that we were making an impact. :) We had a quick meeting with Congressman Honda prior to lunch, and that afternoon a group of very dedicated volunteers headed off to do specific AAPI outreach, using datasheets and maps that Mark Pulido had painstakingly put together Saturday night. At 4:30 pm the 20 or so volunteers who were left headed to Makinos for very delicious food with Congressman Honda and various members of the Las Vegas community, while another 3 or 4 went to hear Bill Clinton speak at a local high school. All in all (except for the one car breakdown on the way back) it was a great trip.
