Republican Sasha Gong stereotypes Asian American voters

Here's a crazy post over at Bluecommonwealth.com, Bizarre Comments by Republican Opponent of Cherniele Herring.

Sasha Gong is running for Delegate in the 46th District (vacated by Brian Moran and narrowly won by Charniele Herring in a recent special election).  She recently met with the Republican Women of Clifton.  The group doesn't quote her directly but according to the minutes of the April 20 meeting, Gong has some interesting views on Asian American voters:

"When you speak with Asian immigrants and hear heavily accented English, they are usually Republicans.  If an Asian-American speaks General American English, he is usually a Democrat."

Then, just three lines below that:

"Democrats pigeonhole people and regard them as stereotypes.  Republicans regard people as individuals."

Do Republicans even listen to what they're saying when they talk?

It's bad enough when politicians outside of our community try to oversimplify our values and try to divide us by immigrant and native-born status.  It's even worse when Asian Americans display such a lack of sophistication. Perhaps we can come up with a new stereotype: "Asian Americans who run on the Republican ticket are usually out of touch."

We won't even bother to give her website a link.

Did she even bother to look at the exit polls from the last Presidential election? Asian Americans voted nearly 2 to 1 for Obama. That implies that many ESL speakers voted for Obama as well. She's just not bothering to draw out the basic lessons for the 2008 elections for Republicans. Their loss.

Buh Republicans like LOVE diversity, President Bush eats TACOS like allll the time!  Don't you people know Republicans totally freed the slaves? [/sarcasm]

True. "Republicans regard people as individuals"...to ignore, exploit, contain or oppress.

I would first check with the sources of that article before drawing some conclusion.

I am a proud Korean Republican and what Ed Eusebio is totally out of line. You may disagree with policies, but being rude will only back-fire on you.

Proud (but unnamed) Korean GOP, true, the "facts" may be fabrications and lies. But why can Republicans dish it, but not take it? Why are Republicans the only ones who get to toss out heresay, insults and outright lies. Why don't you Republicans prove it's a lie, instead of whining that we aren't playing fair?

Don't you know, the time to be rude and attack Republicans is now? Get used to it. Our goal is to remove you guys from power for the next 30 years or more, or push your party so far to the wacky right, that it splinters.  Seems to be working.

BTW: Despite the rediculous stereotypes Sasha Gong may have, or may not have spoken, and despite her being Republican, I still hope she wins public office.  Because there do need to be more AAs in public office.

curtis on Wed, 09/23/2009 - 22:06

I disagree.  We don't need more Asian Americans in office if they don't understand the needs of our community. Given her statement, as quoted from the minutes presumably taken by another Republican, can you really trust Sasha to represent our community?

One thing about Republicans is that they like to accuse people of doing what they do.  Sasha stereotypes Asians, but insists its Democrats who stereotype. Republicans play the race card and accuse Democrats of doing it. It's part of their strategy.

MORE Asian American's in office? There aren't ANY in numbers that mirror demographics!

I'd like to lump Sasha Gong in with the rest of the WingNut rabble, but the more I read about her, the more I see that she's more complex than that. She was imprisoned and suffered much at the hands of the Chinese government. Her dissent and subsequent distrust of expanding government is an understandable result. That she sees China's horror mirrored here is, however, an inaccurate vision of America, as seen through the lens of her experience.

The Question voters should ask is, "Can Gong move past her own personal horrific experiences to understand the needs of a constituency that doesn't fear the government? If she can demonstrate centrism, than I think she's acceptable.  Good luck in this bipartisan climate though.

I want to see more Asians in public office. But there aren't enough "American English speakers" running, or even interested in running.  And that's our failing.

We should have Asian Americans running in all significant races in all regions across this country. We don't, and that sucks, because we'd do a great job.

Last thing we need is APAs in public office who do not represent the general view of APAs.  Otherwise, the mainstream will point to them and say they are accurate representations of APAs.  Elaine Chao comes to mind...

rameyko on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 10:15

Curtis and JKang are correct.  Like the slogan of the liberal blogosphere - electing "more and better Democrats" - our slogan as progressive AAPIs should be "more and better AAPIs," with an emphasis on the AND.  It's not enough to simply have Asian faces if they don't stand strong on the issues that matter.  The last thing we need is more Bobby Jindals and Michelle Malkins to be used by the Right to further divide our community from others.

Angry is totally right, however, that more of us need to step up and put ourselves on the line by running for office.  Besides elected office, we should also be more active in serving on government commissions and boards, running for party offices, and taking visible leadership roles on issues at every level.

We shouldn't vote for someone just because they are Asian American, nor should we vote for them just because they represent an Asian American general viewpoint. Who's to say what the Asian American viewpoint is? What we need is someone who is qualified and able to carry out the pisition he or she is being elected for. Only then can Asian Americans really gain respect , not for their race or who their consitituents are, even  though the Asian American population is quite important to me.

My mom is a first generation naturalized Chinese-American citizen who speaks heavily accented English. I'm a natural born Chinese American. Both of us voted for Obama. Before that, we voted for Kerry, and even before that she voted for Clinton. If that article is true, then Gong can keep being a ignorant sell-out, people like that only defeats their own cause(s). Its sad that this time its a Asian-american who is degenerating and stereo-typing her own ethnicity.

ChungLee (not verified) on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 20:01

The reason Asians don't succeed is we don't unite, we are constantly back stabbing one another. Just look at the posts here. Come on here, look at your comments here!   As an independent 1.5 generation Asian, I have to agree that 2nd generation + Asian Americans tend to lose the traditional Asian values passed down the family lines and tend to align with the ultra progressives agenda, but the 1st Gen fresh off the boat and 1.5 Gen tend to be more conservative on social and economic issues.

I also doubt the integrity of the 2008 exit polls that's done by nonprofit organization where all of its staff are democrats themselves.

Calvin Prashad on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 20:05

So your point is that tradtional Asian values is inconsistant with a progressive agenda?

PalmReader (not verified) on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 20:12

Asians tend to vote Democrat because no matter how successful we are in our career or business, we always feel inadequate  hence we fall for the Democrat message.

There are also those Asians who like Democrat policies because of government freebie programs, such as the School Free Lunch.  How many of you grew up on the Free Lunch program in school not because you really needed but to take advantage of something that is FREE?  When I was in high school, almost every single Korean was on the Free Lunch program and they all came to school driven by their parents in new Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, and every family owned their convenience store, laundry store, liquor store and live in a nice 300k home... They certainly know how to operate their cash business well.

To add insult to injury, many Asians under report their cash earnings so kids like us can qualify to go to college for FREE, get low-income scholarships, state assistance for low-income this and that.  You and I may not realize this when we're young but looking back you know how our parents cheated the system because why not?  Smart Asians should know how to take advantage of every freebie program.
