Samoans are fat?

Yes, Samoans are fat.  Does that surprise anyone?

According to the State of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Health in California Report, (Report), commissioned by the Caifornia Asian Pacific Islander Joint Legislative Caucus, there is an alarming epidemic of overweight children in California.  Samoan children have the largest percentage (54%) of all children in the state of California whose body mass index (BMI) is not within the healthy Fitness Zone.

Quite disturbing to see the truth in black and white, that most of us either refuse to acknowledge or are just immune from seeing.  I see many young people suffering from obesity, diabetes, high blood pressue; some as young as 4 years old.  Samoans as a community have not realized the significance of this destructive pattern in our children's health to take action.  What's more alarming than the data itself is the deafening silence of attending to the problem.

Samoan children as with most children from communities of color, pose the highest health risk for many reasons.  Health disparity, health education, lack of preventative measures, and so forth.   In order to understand issues of this community, you must invest in the collection of more refined data.

According to the report, Communities of color and immigrant populations are disproportionately hurt by a lack of health insurance, high health care costs, poor quality treatment, service gaps and other barriers to care. The report further indicates how health care reform provides an important opportunity to make systemic improvements that can reduce these problems and move the nation toward providing equal access to affordable coverage and care.

The Heathcare Reform bill, we are hopeful to land on the senate floor very soon, will bring the attention we need to address these issues.

Interesting. I can't tell if you're a racist prick, or a concerned asshole. I have had the honor of meeting and befriending many polynesian islanders. The most humble of them all, in my opinion of course, are samoans. Yes many are bigger than the average, but in their homeland, their size indicates "perfect health"..whereas american children there are considered "sickly" and "skinny". A samoan man would most likely say,"it's better to die full, than die hungry."...I for one highly agree. Growing up in Russia, anyone that was overweight meant they went to sleep at night...happy.

I have to somewhat agree with this. You have to remember we are in the "White Man's Land". What they think is normal is way different from the aspects of being a "Polynesian". Im sick of others commenting always about how big "Samoans" are but in the vast spread of "Polynesian History" most of Royalty was "BIG"! It doesn't only pertain to "Samoans" as stated in this article but "WE POLYNESIANS" are BIG! So what?

I am 6'5 and weigh 240lbs and of Samoan and Hawaiian decent. My father is pure Hawaiian and my mother is pure Samoan! I have traced some Tahitian side in my Samoan roots but I always thought it was the same thing as being Samoan. I am pure POLYNESIAN! All the chiefs on both sides were as big as I am. Look at pictures of the Hawaiian King's and his descendants/family, they are all BIG! BIG IS POLYNESIAN! BIG signifies our culture in many ways. It's better for our people to be BIG instead of malnourished.

Don't let the white man or the western ways tell you otherwise. Too many young girls in society look up to the wrong role models and today's fashion models as thats how we should look! You have that all wrong! We are BIG for a good reason and thats how we was raised! It will never change and don't try to change it. The health risks that you have listed what some Polynesians deal with can be taken care of. But don't use the over-eating statement. We were born BIG, we have BIG appetites, nothing to be ashamed of! Don't fall into society's HYPE of what is BIG and what is NORMAL! I'M BIG AND HEALTHY! I have a physical from my doctor to prove it!

Stay Polynesian and don't be white washed! BIG is BEAUTIFUL!

The health care system definately needs a good reform. Obisiety is one of the biggest killers in America and the UK and most of the weight loss companies are jumping on this bandwagon to try find a "best solution". I think that if you go to the gym and exercise regularly and look after your mind and body then you will not run into these issues. For guys it is also important to look after their health with over 10% of guys having erectile disfunction it is also a silent killer for men. I've heard that using an enlarger with the most popular being the size genetics extender.

:)  Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against BIG people. They're no different from anyone else, and are such beautiful peoplt. BUT I do start to have a problem with it when BIG becomes UNHEALTHY. I am pure aussie, 19 years old and weigh 45 kilos. I'm very petite, mostly because of my genetic build. But I eat well and exercise daily, not because I have issues with body image or any of that crap, but simply because i believe in good health and living at your body's est. Big IS beautiful, but not when it's because of an unhealthy diet or laziness. If you're predisposed to a big build, that's fine. But I disagree big is a good thing when you're putting your health and life at risk. Big bones for the win :)  But clogged arteries and lack of self discipline- not so good.

P.s. I'm dating a samoan, for three years now. And he's fit and healthy, and amazing :)  Samoans often have the such great qualities!!  So i'm not racist, or having a go at anyone. Because I'm in love with a samoan.
