San Francisco, CA AAPI House Party 5/31/2009

Report from the San Francisco House Party, hosted by Colbert Tse:

San Francisco, CA 5/31

We had 15 folks attend our house party in San Francisco at my apartment.  Some notable folks included Steve Ngo, City College Board
for San Francisco, Katrina Romero, Dexter Ligot-Gordon, and Ben DeGuzman of Kaya, and Jenn Pae, Nor Cal Chair of the API Caucus.

Steve Ngo gave a talk about how important it is to have people take the momentum of the Obama campaign last year and apply to the local
level (i.e. state, county, city).  Also, he talked about how everyday people can get involved in the ongoing change that has swept the nation.

The Top 3 issues with one other issue that we felt was equally important facing the AAPI community were the following items:

Health Care, Immigration, Economy, and a forth one Family Definition

We felt Health Care was a big issue since there is a lot at stake, especially being in this economical crisis.  Also, the rising costs of health insurance are pricing people from receiving adequate care which can be detrimental in the long run.

Immigration was another issue that we identified as being important since it greatly affects our community and has been a long-standing
issue, especially with the upcoming Census next year and the ramification that it might have for our community if we are not represented well.

The economy was an obvious issue since it affects everyone.  As we have seen, this economic downturn has hit everyone pretty hard with high unemployment, housing foreclosures, and the credit crunch.

The last issue was Family Definition since the traditional nuclear family is thought of as a mother and a father with the children. Nowadays, families are very diverse and not thought of in the traditional sense.  We just want to make sure that our government recognizes the definition of families has changed to be more inclusive to all folks.
