Good work, San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. The Board has approved legislation, offered by Chiu, to improve language services in the city. The vote was 11-0.
The legislation requires the city’s largest departments to provide services in different languages and a strategy for offering them. It applies to any language that is used by 5 percent or more of the total city population and includes the salaries of bilingual city workers who perform telephone, document and onsite language interpretations.
According to Chiu:
“Eight years later, the board finds that differential access to city services still exists due to significant gaps in language services, lack of protocols for departments to procure language services, low budget prioritization by departments for language services,” the legislation says.
As a side note, Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier will be introducing an amendment to include American Sign Language and braille.
