South Asians Spell Out V-O-T-E

A new viral video series is released encouraging the South Asian American community to ‘bee’ a winner and get out to vote November 6th.

Los Angeles, CA Oct 17, 2012 – According to the 2010 Census, there are 4 million South Asians (people with heritage from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan) living in the United States. But not all of them are participating in the civic engagement process. A renegade group of Los Angeles-based South Asian activists and actors aim to change that for this year’s election season.

A series of web-based videos encouraging the South Asian (otherwise known as “Desi”) community to get out the vote will be released today (Oct 17, 2012) at noon PST. The videos depicts actors in a mock “14th Annual Desi Spelling Bee” grappling with deep issues on the civic engagement process while being totally funny at the same time. The series of videos were directed by indie filmmaker Tanuj Chopra (Punching at the Sun, Nice Girls Crew) and will be hosted on YouTube on actress and viral video star Kosha Patel’s channel(http://www.youtube.com/user/KoshaDelhi).

“Our community is often engaged with politics, as can be seen with South Asian elected officials such as Kamala Harris, Hansen Clarke, and Bobby Jindal, but it isn’t often that we see people encouraging our community though the simple act of registering and mobilizing South Asian Americans to the polls,” says producer Sohini Sengupta, “There has yet to be a video to target and encourage the South Asian American community to get out to vote. We wanted to break that cycle this year and are so excited to collaborate with such an amazing team to make this idea come alive.”

The get-out-the-vote web series is in fact the first video ever created aimed directly at getting the national South Asian community to vote in the U.S. elections this November 6th, 2012. The GOTV series features up and coming young South Asian actors, including Parvesh Cheena(Outsourced), Pia Shah (Grant St. Shaving Company) Sunkrish Bala (Notes From the Underbelly), Sonal Shah (Scrubs), Karthik Srinivasan (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity)and Kosha Patel (S*** White Girls Say to Indian Girls).

The series is supported by 18 Million Rising, a new campaign encouraging the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to get civically engaged using technology and  social media. 18 Millon Rising is producing multiple non-partisan viral videos this election season to get out the vote in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

“Getting out the South Asian vote is the first step to building political power in our community on relevant issues such as hate crimes, immigration, and healthcare,” says electoral activist Tanzila ‘Taz’ Ahmed. “Why not have fun and make people laugh while doing it?”
