LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

John Chiang to the Rescue: Bell Edition

Remember that recent story about the city officials in the small blue-collar town of Bell, CA, who were paying themselves huge fat salaries, while laying off essential city workers? Well, it seems like these officials may been using illegal money to do it. And State Controller John Chiang is trying to do something about it. Go get 'em, John!

Hansen Clarke wins MI primary

Great news out of Detroit. State Senator Hansen Clarke has won an upset victory in his overwhelmingly Democratic district. He is poised to become the next Asian American in Congress. Clarke attended the first APAP Detroit meeting last year. We;ll definitely think of ways we can help out his campaign.

Clarke upsets Cheeks Kilpatrick in key race; end

of a political dynasty?

Raj Goyle Sets Cash on Hand Record

As we reported earlier, moderate Kansas State Rep. Raj Goyle has turned the open seat race in Kansas into one of the few pick up opportunities for the Democratic party in 2010. According to his recent press release, Goyle $252,953.29 in the final quarter of 2009. The race is still an uphill battle, but Goyle seems to be doing everything right.

Surya Yalamanchili switches to Democratic primary

When former reality TV star Surya Yalamanchili ("The Apprentice") announced his candidacy for the 2nd Congressional district, he came out as an independent. Now, after a few months of campaigning, he has decided to pursue the Democratic nomination. The announcement from his website:

Raj Goyle makes KS race competitive

Thanks to his great first quarter in fundraising and a history of winning in Republican territory, Democratic candidate for Congress in Kansas 4th Congressional District and current State Senator Raj Goyle, has had his race upgraded from Safe Republican to Likely Republican by the well-respected Congressional Quarterly.  While this remains an uphill battle, the upgrade gives a glimmer of hope and could show further momentum.

Hansen Clarke joins Governor's race in MI

Here's an interesting development out of my home state. This past week, Lt. Gov. John Cherry, the presumed favorite, withdrew from the race for Governor of Michigan. That has opened up a floodgate of new candidates, including progressive State Senator Hansen Clarke. Sen. Clarke was kind enough to join us at the kick off of our APAP Chapter in Detroit last year. We definitely look forward to supporting him as well.

Hoon-Yung Hopgood announces bid for MI Senate

Just got this email from former member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, Hoon-Yung Hopgood. Hopgood, the state's first Korean American elected to the House, is throwing his hat in the ring for the state's Senate. According to Wikipedia:

Manan Trivedi's Statement on Afghanistan

Reaction to President Obama's plan to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan has been decidely mixed with some resistance from progressive members of Congress. Joining this chorus is APAP PAC-endorsed candidate Manan Trivedi who just released this statement.

Ami Bera's Fundraising clears the field

Thanks to some stellar fundraising in the past two quarters, physician Ami Bera has managed to scare off some potential rivals and avoid a Democratic primary for the Congressional seat in CA-03. His main competitor, Bill Slaton, dropped out today and endorsed Bera. Bera now has a clear path to the general election against incumbent Republican Dan Lungren. According to this article in Hotline:

John Liu on the Asian American vote

Here's a link to an awesome audioclip of Comptroller-elect John Liu discussing his own race, as well as the Asian American community in general. In the eight-minute clip, Liu discusses everything from the historic number of Asian American candidates to the dynamics of the AAPI community, calling it a friendly "sibling rivalry." Liu also discusses how the different communities were ultimately able to cross ethnic lines and support different AAPI candidates. It's a great interview and definitely worth a listen. It's obvious that Liu has a great knowledge of the AAPI community.
