Cupertino becomes third city with Asian American majority on city council

Asian American politicians continue to make strides. In addition to the victories on Tuesday of openly-gay AAPI candidates Evan Lowe in Campbell, CA, and Alex Wan in Atlanta, we have word that Cupertino, CA, just became the third city in the country, and the only one in Northern California, with an Asian American council majority. Of special note, newcomer Barry Chang received the endorsements of Norm Mineta and John Chiang.

Evan Low becomes mayor of Campbell

Congratulations again to Evan Low on becoming the youngest Asian American mayor in the country, as well as the youngest openly gay mayor as well. For those of you unfamiliar with Evan, he's a great advocate for both AAPI's and LGBT issues. Most recently, he helped coordinate the mixer of AAPI progressives in Southern California that APAP co-hosted. Here's just one of the many great write-ups that just appeared.

Asian American politicians battle over high speed rail

Let's call it the Battle of the Bayou. Down in Louisiana, Governor Bobby Jindal and Congressman Joseph Cao are at odds in a little Republican party battle. Governor Jindal continues to try and court the right-wing for a future Presidential run while Congressman Cao, who is fighting for his political life, tries to appeal to the middle in his uphill re-election bid. Guess which side won?

Kevin Kim wins City Council seat in Queens, First Korean American

UPDATE (11/4/09) - Unfortunately, we got a little ahead of ourselves on this one. Back in Sept, Kevin won the nomination and we assumed he would win the general election. In an upset, Kevin actually lost to Republican Daniel Halloran III. More information on the race can be found here.

New York City AAPI Candidates Update

The primary election in New York City is less than a week away. As you know, there are quite a few Asian Americans running for office. Here's a round up of a few articles and endorsements on the City Council candidates from around the web:

Andy Quach Pleads Guilty to DUI

Here's an update on a story we've been covering. Republican City Councilman Andy Quach of Westminster has pleaded uilty to misdemeanor drunk driving charges stemming from an Aug. 2 traffic accident when he crashed his Mercedes S550 into a pole knocking out power to about 300 homes. Quach did not attend the hearing.

Honolulu City Council shelves plan to criminalize body odor

In Honolulu, the City Council just dropped attempts to criminalize its citizens for foul body odor.

Asian American Democrats discuss healthcare on NPR (transcript)

Congressmembers Judy Chu (CA-32) and Mike Honda (CA-15) were on NPR's Tell Me More this morning to discuss healthcare reform. Great to see them discussing the public option and how their constituents are in favor of it.  Please continue to support these courageous Congressmembers who are under a lot of pressure to give in to the White House which seems desperate to cut a deal. (Who knew throwing temper tantrums, lying and bringing guns to townhalls would get you what you want.)

Tammy Duckworth Flies Again

Here's a great story in the Chicago Tribune about Assistant Cabinet Secretary Tammy Duckworth. As you'll recall, Tammy lost both of her legs when a rocket propelled grenade shot down the Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting in Iraq. That was nearly five years ago. Now she's back to flying again.
