Alice Lai-Bitker will not seek re-election

Wow, the last few days have brought a flurry of resignations and people declining to run for re-election. I guess people must've been talking around the dinner table over the holidays. In addition to the high profile announcements from Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Governor Bill Ritter of Colorado (D), we also have some local politicians making news. I am not personally familiar with Alameda County Board of Supervisor President Alice Lai Bitker, but some of our APAP friends in the Bay Area say she is great.

To commemorate the first year of the Obama Administration and what can arguably be an era of progressive politics, APAP is rolling out with another Top 10 list! To close out 2009 APAP is giving a shout out and much needed accolades to the "top Asian Pacific American progressives" of 2009.

John Liu and Margaret Chin continue to get great press

Ever since New York City Councilman John Liu won the Democratic nomination and Margaret Chin, along with candidates Kevin Kim and Yen Chou, won in their Democratic primaries for city council last month, there's been a lot of great press about the milestone for Asian Americans.  Here are a couple of more recent articles.

Ashwin Madia, an update from Minnesota

In the 2008 election cycle, one of the most exciting progressive candidates to emerge was Ashwin Madia up in Minnesota. Ashwin, an Iraq War veteran, came out of nowhere to win the endorsement of the state's Democratic Farm Labor Party and become the party's nomination in MN-03, a suburb of the Twin Cities. With the retirement of Republican Jim Ramstad and a Cook partisan index of R+1, both parties dumped major resources into the contest.

Judy Chu organizes in-district swearing in ceremony

In front of a diverse crowd of over 1,500 enthusiastic friends, family and supporters, Congressmember Judy Chu (CA-32) held an in-district swearing in ceremony at East LA College today.  It was a homecoming of sorts as Judy taught at this school for many years, starting in the 80's and up until her election to the California Assembly.

Jay Goyal up for Lt. Gov. of Ohio

Just got this email from the Indian American Leadership Initiative.  (For those of you unfamiliar with the organization, you should really check them out.) Anyway, their email speculates that Ohio Governor Ted Strickland (D) is considering State Rep. Jay Goyal to be the next Lt. Governor of the State. (The current Lt. Governor, Lee Fisher will be running for the U.S. Senate.)

SF Board of Supervisor David Chiu promotes language access

Good work, San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. The Board has approved legislation, offered by Chiu, to improve language services in the city. The vote was 11-0.
